This is impressive.
Fischer is a real hands-on glass worker as well as an anthropologist. As such she is able to describe an ancient Israeli glass industry site with a practiced eye and the ability to distinguish real conclusions from speculation. She reviews the ancient relics, compares the findings with leftovers from modern mideastern sites, studies the practice of native workers from several other countries, builds test equipment based on the ancient specifications, uses it and reports her findings. In a way parts of this book are explorations similar to books written by modern flint knappers, such as Whittaker: Flintknapping: Making and Understanding Stone Tools , however since hot glass working is so much more dangerous and obscure her work is much more of a feat of experimental archaeology than Whittaker's living tradition. Bravo!
