great book when is the follow up.
As the other review states this is great for people who want to start at the beginning and takes you to a great understanding of a difficult to learn subject. A book that followed on however would be welcome for those of us who are no longer begginers.

Computer architecture gold mine
I'm a student of Computer and Communications Engineering and I've been reading this book as part of my computer architecture module. Can I just say that I can't recommend this book highly enough. It teaches the basics from the bottom up. Really easy to understand, really practical, and plenty of examples of useful items of code. (Primarily assembly language but some C is covered too.) I've spent a lot of time dipping in and out of various resources but this really is all you need for the vast majority. I needed to focus on my lecturer's notes when it came to memory devices and address buses, for example, but that may be more to do with the particular way they were being covered in lectures. And don't worry about the focus on the PIC - most of the material I studied in this book was universally applicable and fundamental to computer architecture.
