Star Trek fans and collectors will love this one-of-a-kind, mini-size collectible tricorder with light and sound. The tricorder is a multifunction handheld device used for sensor scanning and data analysis. Kit includes: Light-up tricorder with sound 48-page book on the history of tricorders and full-color photos Review: Set phasers to "value!" - You're spending $12. You get more than what you're paying for it. The light up effects and sound are spot on to TNG. There is no way to turn the sound off when it's open. You can (however) put your thumb or tape over the speaker if that's a concern. It's about half sized of the ones in the show, which means it can easily be concealed in a pocket for a surprise if you are out and about. It looks quite authentic. The stickers are not hard to apply, just take your time with them. My batteries were slightly corroded (it's 8 years past date of manufacture at time of writing) but still functional. Easy to swap. Review: GREAT! Pro's + Con's included. - The weaknesses are that sadly it just uses decals and no actual buttons or levers, etc. So it's just stickers rather than a physical interface. Some of the previous models had a rotator or a button. Second, it's about 30-20% smaller than the actual Tricorder when you look at the show, but for some reason in your hands you don't pay attention to that and forget that as the sounds + lights distract you w/fun. Third, the awesome ratchet sound for opening + closing can disappear if you don't press or angle the moving door right for the hinges to connect. But the strengths imo overrule all the weaknesses. LOVE the ratchet sound for opening. It's not just lit up, there's sequencing in the lights. The sound effect is quite loud, and best of all it's identical to the shows sound! It's a fun thing to bring at conventions and scan people and tell them God has blessed them; you're healthy lol. The End. quick video clip included. Bonus: I've always asserted that the TRIcorder has the name for it's funcion; which means THREE things are recorded. As we live only in Space/Time as our entire reality (of this realm), what is inside Space/Time number only in Two things; Energy + Matter. Anything you can think of automatically falls into one of those two categories, all things must be either Energy or Matter, as that is the sum total parameters. There is nothing else. So the Tricorder records data on ONE; Energy. And the other is: Matter. For Matter it would be identifying one of the three phases of Matter of course, solid/liguid/air. Then it could even identify the substance of whatever matter phase (gold, silver, trilithium, etc) and also the quantity that is present in it's immediate vicintity. For Energy it could identify the type of energy in front of it by it's signature (electricity, heat, magnetism, sounds, spectral light, radiation, etc) and the volume. The last item in reads/records is the Space/Time continuum (in which Energy + Matter exists in). So regarding Space it records distances, dimensions such as Width/Length/Height, mass, and area. For Time, it can record the timing of a cycle, or basically record Rate of Speed (mile per hour, time for a cycle to complete, etc) and of course it would have a clock for the time of day. As such it has it's labeled designation of "TRI corder" because it records the THREE or TRI basics of our current universe. Matter, Energy, Space/Time. And Star Trek itself has acknowledge on the REAL show how things must be either Energy or Matter, even if the science books has not designated this loud standing basic and principle. Okay, end nerd rant! Thanks for going out into outer space Mister William Shatner! In closing- not just Live Long and Prosper but also: Jesus is here for everyone, repent as a sinner who is wrong and flawed, and thank God with your trust. Amen.

Stickers Don't Stick and It's LOUD
This is a pretty cool toy. Inexpensive and fun. The only complaints I have is that the stickers keep popping off. I keep pressing them down and yet they keep popping off. I cleaned it thoroughly before applying the stickers and they still keep peeling up. Also, the sound is LOUD. I put clear, packaging tape over the speaker and it's still loud. I guess for children they wouldn't care. All in all, it's a pretty cool version of the tricorder from Star Trek TNG. I just wish they had not used stickers and used decals instead, like a toy model. I'm going to try and open it up and put foam over the speaker to quiet it down.

Exceeded expectations for $12, stickers hard to apply
This was a perfect complement to my Halloween TNG Trek costume. Sure, it's pint-sized, but it is really loud and has flashing lights! While it's clearly built to a price point I did drop it several times directly on concrete and it emerged basically unscathed. I do wish the stickers were pre-applied; I got most of them spot-on but the big sticker that goes around the "screen" is very slightly off. You don't get a second chance with the stickers. If you're looking for a screen-accurate cosplay device this ain't it, but if you just want a fun little toy this fits the bill.

Insanely Great for the Price!
This tricorder is very awesome for ~ $9. The lights and sound are fantastic, and once stickered up it looks really cool. The door even makes a ratcheting sound upon opening and closing. I prefer the smaller size because I can slip this in my pocket at costume parties, but it's large enough to look convincing (could be a smaller variant). The only downside is that you have to be very careful when applying the decals, because the indentations have very tight tolerances. I did (slightly) mess up a couple; my advice is to carefully line them up at the top and work your way down. Yes, in a dream world this would have the decals pre-applied, different sounds and a button to shut the sound off, and even some LEDs on the front. But at this price, it's semi-miraculous how much quality and how many features were squeezed in. I'd give it 6/5 stars if it were possible. If you're a Next Gen fan, I HIGHLY recommend this!

Scanning ... for fun!
Really nice mini-replica. It's actually a nice size. Small enough to go in your pocket and big enough to actually look pretty good! You can see it in the photo next to a Bluetooth TNG communicator badge --- that is also awesome and made by a totally different company I believe. I'll literally go out with both of these because I'm such a nerd. LOL As this pic indicates b/c I was out to dinner with my wife when I took this. I felt like taking a picture of a couple gifts her and the kids got me for father's day to show our kids -- who were with grandmom that day -- that I was enjoying what they got me. The tricorder is really nice and very reasonable (at least she said it was when she got it). This should go without saying but NOTE: If you're getting this as a gift for a Trek fan know a few things: 1. It's not full scale (1:1) but it;'s still neat 2. It doesn't have any buttons, not even on off. It turns on and makes sounds and lights when opened and goes off when closed. No interactivity other than your imagination. 3. This is from the next generation (TNG) not the classic series (TOS: the original series) or the movies with Kirk and the crew. So if you're buying for a TNG fan, they're probably like this. But if not, they may still like it or may not care about it. I hope this helps! Trying t get caught up on some reviews to give credit where credit is due, and warn, when warnings are due. LOL

Cute, but too small
It's cute, however, much smaller than anticipated; too small to use as I intended to cosplay with it :(
