Bible was a little smaller than I expected. (My other large-font one is massive.) Pretty easy to transports and durable enough, although it doesn’t have a luxurious feel. As far as the translation, that’s like basing your review of a net on how much you like the sport of basketball. However, other reviewers did it, so I will factor that in my review. The Van Dyke is the most popular translation in the Protestant Christian circles I know. Van Dyke is an eloquent translation, and I have been reading it for a long time. I have multiple Van Dyke versions. However, Van Dyke was completed in 1865, and “Modern Standard Arabic” was still emerging (The New Van Dyke is not that different at all from what I can tell). As a result, some of the words used in Van Dyke aren’t common in modern Arabic. (This is mostly true of the Old Testament.) The “Book of Life”, on the other hand, was finished in 1988, and uses words that are common today. It is still eloquent, though, in my opinion, and employs a high formal register (there are “simplified Arabic translations” —this is not that). My two cents—it is good to have both Van Dyke and the Book of Life. They are quite different from one another, especially in the Old Testament, where I found the differences in places to be quite vast. That makes for good language practice. English Bibles have ~12k unique words. Arabic must not be that far off, which means reading the Bible is a good way to maintain your formal Arabic aside from the spiritual benefits. P.s. For extra credit, read the book of Job. Metaphor on metaphor on metaphor. Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon are also very rich in imagery. Not for the faint of heart.
