People are whinging about this thing as if they know what they are talking about. For the sound quality and features it has, The Hiby R4 is an absolute steal. Yes, I'm a music snob, but I live in the real world. It's the music that matters to me, and the kit enables that passion. Hiby are now an established brand and this is a feature-rich and great-sounding player. I have had a couple of the expensive DAPs and even through my decent hifi, I can't hear the difference between the HIBY and A&K. Allow it to "burn in" (like many audio machines, its components need to bed in - it may take 60 hours for some items to reach their best performance). Learn how to use it and don't forget to budget for a high-quality micro SD card - I have 17,000 lossless files on a 1.5TB card, for example - this may cost as much as the DAP itself. You will also need some decent headphones of some kind, to take advantage of the gorgeous sound and that will set you back £150+. I think that this price-point represents the sweet-spot in the balance between sound quality and price. With an expensive machine, I am worried about actually using it, and as most of these units are sealed, it's a nightmare to change the battery and it is likely to last you around 4 years anyway (look into iBasso if you want to change the battery yourself). This is my daily music player - it goes in the car with me, gets slung into bags and goes in my pocket (just about) when I am making a public appearance. The silicone cover is not pretty, but it serves its function well. *top tip* I would recommend getting a 10cm, right-angled extension cable to take the strain off the socket and headphone jack. You could use Bluetooth, but you will not get the full quality of the music and it adds to the battery drain. I have found IEMs (in-ear monitors) to be a very good solution. Use the larger, balanced headphone socket because they say the sound is better (yeah, right) and it's a slightly tougher connection. If you mess it up, you still have the standard 3.5mm jack. I am not going out looking like a muppet in my expensive over-ear headphones. HIBY and iBasso are both great brands with excellent sound. I don't see any reason to spend more than £300 on a DAP, unless you have a £10,000 hifi and an immense lossless music collection or you're a casual trying to show off. (Of course, I have such a machine linked to the hifi, lol, but I'm a commando not a casual). For £500, you can get a great player, a massive microSD card and some great headphones. This is how to do it, IM(not so)HO. Don't worry so much about the DAC or the processing - who cares? This technology is mature and there are a great many wonderful sounding machines out there. This is a good solid performer and I recommend it. You will have to spend £thousands on a player to get a noticeable improvement in sound quality - sue me - so dive in with this one. I only review products I think are great and nobody pays me.

A superb, high-quality device. It does everything I need at a great price. It is beautifully constructed and feels very comfortable in the hand. I bought this to give my family an easy way to select music stored on our local network. A standard tablet wasn't an option because non-dedicated streamers don't output lossless audio, and dedicating a tablet to a single app felt wasteful. Running the Symfonium Android app on the HiBy allows us to stream to any Hi-Fi, Bose, or speaker system across the house. My only tiny criticism is the small screen size, but using a compact handheld unit is far more cost-effective than buying a dedicated desktop streamer—and the screen quality itself is excellent.

I'm at the amateur end of the audiophile spectrum, having recently re-discovered hi-res audio. I chose the R4 as the price seemed decent, reviews good, spec good for the price. I am not disappointed. It sounds great through my Sennheiser Momentum 4s (wired) and also HD 599s. Battery seems strong, its brand new of course its strong, but it looks to have a large capacity for multiple days of use. The onboard equaliser is epic and allows an incredible level of fine tuning. I'm really happy with the sound this thing produces. The operating system is relatively simple being Android. The one disappointment is the physical buttons. Whilst I am grateful for there to even be chunky buttons, they are temperamental. The play/pause button sometimes doesn't work first time. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it needs a 2nd press, almost like it needs waking up. In addition it is all too easy to accidentally pick up the unit and accidentally press a button. Sliding the R4 into a pocket triggers the buttons too. Annoying. But since i only really listen to music at my work desk, its not a huge problem. I'm yet to download any music to the device or use its expandable storage, choosing to stream via Tidal so far. It has been everything I wanted and I'm happy with it.

Excellent use and good screen display. It is on the high side on price but its also equipped with a good OS. I do like the chunkier side of the design, it doesn't identify as a smartphone. Delivers good sound and is clean regardless of what file you use. Also it comes with screen protectors which gives piece of mind to some. If you used to own an MP3 and want to listen to some songs or transfer them to this device this is the device to use. The HiBy R4 is a standout choice for anyone seeking audiophile-grade sound, futuristic design, and Android flexibility—all without breaking the bank. Whether you're upgrading from an older DAP or diving into high-res audio for the first time, this player delivers

great dap and good quality sound but poor apps and does not manage multiple cd indexing which i need for classical music. You can insert a micro sd card. I went mad and bought and inserted 2 TB. This did work, but i had to put the card in the other way up from what the manual said. Insert with contacts of the micro sd card FACING up. Well perhaps mine is an odd one that has been manufactured badly!

First of all, I'd like to say that I really did want to like this DAP, and the one I got was faulty. However, I'll try to say what I did like about it when it worked. What I liked: I bought the HiBy R4 because, compared to some of the other high-end audiophile gear out there, it was comparatively affordable (I say that loosely, given it was still expensive) and I really liked the cyberpunk-esque design. When I got it, I remember thinking that it was really well presented in the packaging, and I really liked that the 'on' button was visually and texturally different and that the black panel on the back lit up when it was on. I liked the aesthetics of the HiBy OS that came as stock, and it ran all of my headphones and IEMs, from Chu IIs to Sennheiser HD600s, well and went above the loudness that I needed. I was very pleased with it while I had it. What I didn't like: it was a lot bulkier than I expected, and definitely wouldn't easily slip into a pocket or small bag. This is just a nitpick but I think I remember there being spelling mistakes in the OS. However, my biggest issue is that after a week of me having it, I plugged it in to charge (as its battery was flat) and I heard a 'pop' noise from the device itself, which I would now assume was a capacitor blowing or something like that. I was using an appropriate charger that I used for all my other USB-C devices, but after that, it never turned on again. I tried many things to try and get it to turn on again, such as trying to using a button combination to factory reset etc. but it was to no avail. Thankfully because it happened within a week I was able to get a refund, but because of this experience, I was reluctant to order another one and bought a FiiO JM21 instead. From the countless good reviews I've seen online, I'd assume that for most people, the R4 works very well and they're very happy with it. This was unfortunately not my experience and makes me question how durable the internal electronics are inside if simply plugging it in to charge from dead can kill it.

I bought this a few weeks ago, so far so good. Excellent quality audio, balanced output and decent power to drive most headphones. Just the one negative is the screen brightness, you will struggle to see this in bright sunshine. It looks cool, and despite some online reviews, the overheating issue is now sorted, it barely gets warm.

I bought this for my son as he’s just getting into music and at 11 years old we were having the debate about getting a phone or something more dedicated to music. We opted for the latter and the hiby R4 came out top in most research for good quality entry DAPs. I’d already ordered when I was chatting to my neighbour who is a big audiophile. He told me not to order a DAP just yet. When I told him I’d already ordered an R4 he breathed a sigh of relief - he was going to demo his as proof of it being worth the price. Suffice to say when it arrived we weren’t disappointed. Songs I’d listened to for 30/40 years all of a sudden had new layers, new textures and were transformed. And this was on a pair of cheap wired Mario switch themed headphones. My son now has a fantastic music player but he can also have some elements of a smartphone such as clock / alarm / calendar and some streaming apps - but none of the toxic social media. Suffice to say one of these is now on my Christmas list.

Great product

This is my third HiBy DAP. I gave my first one to my nephew when I decided I needed a larger screen. It's replacement found its way into my wife's possession! So, I purchased the R4 and could not be happier. It is a bit chunky but that is fine given its excellent battery life and large screen. I really appreciate the balanced input which works well with my Sennheiser Momentum headphones. The sound quality is top notch...at least to my older ears! I suspect that most people will not be able to hear a substantial difference between the R4 and more expensive DAPs unless using $400+ headphones. Another great feature is the Android interface. I can add any application from the Play Store to the unit. Currently I have music oriented applications installed along internet radio apps. Adding music to the R4 is as easy as copying files to a MicroSD card and inserting it into the slot on the side of the unit. Updates are also easy via WiFi. All in all, this is a great DAP and another fine product from HiBy.

Es un gran reproductor de música, se escucha bastante bien al ser android facilita las cosas si no tienes una biblioteca de canciones descargadas, es un reproductor pesado y la verdad es que si se calienta en sesiones largas pero por lo demas vale muchismo la pena sobre todo si cuentas con audifonos balanceados puedes apreciar muchismo detalles que de otro modo pasan desapercibidos

10/10, el mejor reproductor para empezar y el mas económico de este tipo, al menos de Hiby Es un gran reproductor, no me canso de el, la musica se escucha increible, aunque si lo compras debes tener unos buenos audífonos de cable para aprovechar lo maximo del producto

I love everything about this thing. I have thousands of CD quality flac files on a 1tb SD card. I use the Poweramp software to play my music. The day it arrived I used wifi and got into the google play store so I could get the few apps I needed. I had to connect wifi for a couple more days after that because Poweramp requires special verifications on a new divice, but It has been 100% offline ever since. I logged out of my google account, and the wifi has never been turned back on. Over a year later and it is still functioning perfectly and sounds amazing. Worth every penny.
