Electro-Voice RE27N/D Dynamic Cardioid Multipurpose Microphone

I record a podcast with two main hosts. We used to use nice (AKG 420) condenser mics with pop filters attached, but I found the variability as the hosts moved their heads to be a real problem. As soon as I placed this microphone in front of each host, most of my headaches went away. The Variable-D technology that they talk so much about (which seemed gimmicky) on the product actually works beautifully. Listening back, all that variability is gone, and though the hosts haven't changed how they talk into the mics, the sound no longer reflects their movements. Another plus is that the internal plosive/pop screen seems to suffice, so I don't have to lug around the akward pop filters I have had no issue plugging these into a Zoom H6 recorder and getting great signal, the lack of line noice is amazing! An added bonus is that I no longer have to use the phantom power which helps a lot in battery life, nice for when you are on location and you forgot to bring extras! Watching videos online comparing this mic to it's older brother, the much lauded Electro-Voice RE-20, they mention that the high end is more pronounced in this mic, I found this to be true, but the high end roll-off switch seems to compensate for this quite well. It's especialy helpful if you have someone who lovesss to draw out their "S" sounds. I appreciate this top end sensitivity at times though, as I've also collected some lovely field audio with this mic. The crack of lightening absolutely sparkles when recorded by this mic.

This microphone is being used with a kenwood 990 amateur transceiver were this microphone gives unrivalled performance the audio quality is excellent I chose this microphone after hours of listening to tests between others it’s rather large but gives absolute true sounding audio of very high quality

This is everything the RE-20 is and more. Add about 6db overall gain. More tighter and controlled bottom end with a bit more sparkle on top. Without any eq. Definitely the go to without any eq or preamp needed. Can just go raw out and have no shame!

I picked up the RE27 after trying out the Shure SM7B and the RE20. The SM7B was the most gain hungry of the bunch and had the flattest frequency response, which is great for audio engineers as a "blank canvas" to work with. I used the mic for live meetings and video voice overs so I wanted something that sounded better without the need to equalize [for the meetings]. I saw a comparison between the SM7B and the RE20 and thought the latter blew the former out of the water for spoken word; it adds more presence and sounded more authoritative (you'll see this adjective a lot when researching on the RE20). I bought it and enjoyed the sound for a bit but then saw a video comparing it to the RE27... Before I continue with my opinion, I should add that everybody's voice is different and these mics might sound better/worse for you. For me, the RE27 outperforms the other two mentioned here. It's not nearly as muddy as the SM7B and RE20, and requires slightly less gain (SM7B required the most, RE20 was a little better, RE27 requires the least). The lack of coloration/proximity effect is nice. It also has three manual switches that will affect the sound--a high-pass filter (-3DB for higher frequencies that can help with sibilance), a mid-range filter (100-1000Hz) which I keep off because it makes your voice sound flat, and a bass rolloff. I'll add to this review once I have more time for it but I thought I'd write this up for anybody comparing the three mics mentioned here.
