Works well for fresh hops
I bought this for use in my boiling kettle for use with fresh hops. Without this, the fresh hops clog the transfer tubing when I siphon to the fermenter. This spider was 100% effective in retaining the hop pieces and the transfer went smoothly. The spider also retains a good deal of the Pelletized hops, but when these disperse, some does get into the boiling kettle and then to the primary, but considerably less than without the spider. I have not yet used this for dry hopping in the primary. I would like to use it for that purpose, particularly with fresh hops, because again, fresh hops clog the auto-siphon. No hope for dry hopping in the secondary, though, because the spider is far too large to fit through the carboy opening. The mesh is very fine, so it does retain most of even the pelletized hops. Liquid movement through the fine mesh is somewhat limited, so extraction of the hops will likely not be as high as if they were added loose, but probably comparable or better toExtraction efficiency if using a cloth sack to hold the hops. The spider cleans reasonably well. It does take some extensive rinsing to get all the fines out, but still not a big deal.

Well built but maybe too fine a mesh?
Very well built. Used several times and still looks new. Make sure you keep it off the bottom of your kettle though! I made the mistake of detaching this from the edge of my 20G kettle during the boil because I felt the hops were not circulating in the wort. Bad idea. It was sitting on the bottom of the kettle for probably 15 minutes, but when I emptied it there was a neatly scorched circle on the bottom. Following fermentation the beer had a burnt popcorn flavor and was ruined. 100% user error though, no fault of the strainer. I feel like the mesh might almost be too fine to allow good circulation during the boil though so I haven’t used it in a while.

Meh, so-so
Not too easy to clean, hops get stuck behind the metal bar that runs from top to bottom. The thing is now brown, so gotta be BS about being stainless steel. Worst part is that easily tips over and hops dump out the top. Get one with two arms or just use a bag, which I do now.

Keeps your hops in place.
This is an essential part of every brew day for me. I used to waste so much time and wort trying to whirlpool the hops to the middle. Now I have only 10% of the hop material that I used to get. I feel 300 micron keeps more hop material out of the wort than 400 micron. Haven’t had any issues with hop utilization either. Once or twice during the boil I will come by and lift it out of the kettle and allow the wort to drain. This ensures the hops are getting used properly. It does drain slowly though because it’s 300 micron. Also it’s rather messy to clean, at least for me. I use a garden hose to spray the outside of the screen, then soap and water. Altogether this kid the best value you can find for a hop spider. I would buy it again.

very sturdy and allows me to add almost a pound of ...
Update after almost a year of use.Love this.. I ended up buying a second one. Great at just dumping your hops or boil additions into and not worrying about sacks anymore. Also great to have as a trub filter into the fermenter and helps strain out any unwanted trub and particles before they get in.Original post.very well made! very sturdy and allows me to add almost a pound of hops pellets to my brews.after i cool down the brew i run a pump to whirlpool and i have the output dump into this basekt.. it acts as a filter to get out any trub, etc.. and that way I only have crystal clear wort going to the fermenter.I will buy another one as soon as I get an excuse to... several of my homebrewing buddies have commented on the solid construction of this and all have gone out and bought this one.. Way more sturdy than some of the others out here on amazon.

... far but had to review because I was so happy with it
Only used once so far but had to review because I was so happy with it. I thought it would filter leaf hops pretty wall but was skeptical about using pellet hops, which is all I use. It did a fantastic job, used all pellet hops in a brew, it looked like all of it was still in the basket when I was done. My beer looked clear pumping out from from the plate chiller. When I was done the pot was virtually clean , no crud in the bottom and no hop mess stuck to the sides. I literally just had to rinse it out. Flushed the plate chiller, clean water coming out after a couple seconds of clear beer. No clogs during cool down process and no crud coming out when I flushed the chiller. worked perfectly.

It works and was made well.
I had it for a ew months now, just what I wanted, it help keep the beer clear... one mistake I made was I did not wash it before I used it (since I got it that morning and we brewing in the afternoon and I was putting it in boiling water).. anyway....Wash it with soap and water before first use.. don't waste 5 gallons of beer like I did.

Excellent Quality
Struggling to find a reasonably priced strainer of the same micron to filter waste oil and hold filter socks, I purchased this unit. The quality of construction for the price is excellent and a quarter of the price of similar purpose constructed strainers.
