Mastering Ethereum: Building Smart Contracts and Dapps

Details on Ethereum covered well. This is not a programming course but does introduce readers to enough SOLIDITY to see the point of what is being said. The book is not light reading and covers a lot of ground, although it strikes a very good balance between concept and detail throughout and is well structured.

I've already read Mastering Bitcoin so I've skipped to the most important chapters (for me): Smart Contracts and Solidity, Smart Contracts and Vyper and Smart Contract Security - my main concern being security. I must say I've found well documented almost every hack case that happened on the Ethereum Network. I conclude that the book (plus the references mentioned there) helped me a lot in taking crucial decisions regarding my solidity implementations.

Infinitely easier to understand and more detailed than books like Token Economy. The title might suggest that this is an advanced reading, more suitable for in-depth studying, but it's not the case. Yes, the book shows some code (mostly Solidity) and other deep technical details, but the reader can skip all of this and focus on the theory. And that theory is wonderfully explained in a way that even a person with no previous knowledge of Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other web3 technologies can understand. While not framed in this way, this book is by far the best introduction to web3 I've read so far. I especially recommend it to understand elusive concepts like "gas". The book could improve in a couple of areas. First, the chapter dedicated to the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is subpar compared to the rest of the book in terms of clarity. It would benefit from a rewrite focused on a slower pace. Second, the last chapter dedicated to consensus is significantly underdeveloped. Other parts of the book offer extensive explanations without in-depth dissertations on arcane details. I don't see why something as important as the blockchain consensus didn't receive the same treatment. Regardless of these two minor flaws, this text is recommended to anyone who wants to explore web3 (or has already started) for one reason or another: join a DAO, mint an NFT, transact Ether, or write a smart contract. --- How I review books 5 stars - an exceptional book that expands my reasoning, not just my knowledge 4 stars - a great book that significantly expands my knowledge 3 stars - a book with some interesting information and some major flaws that didn't really make an impact in my life. (Notice that there's a time in life for certain books. It's possible that this was not the time for this book, and the review rating would change ten years from now) 2 stars - a book that gave me nothing and took my time. 1 star - a book so poorly written that I couldn't even finish reading.

An amazing introduction to Ethereum and dApp creation. Absolutely loved this book!

The book is very well written and detailed. It gives a great overview of the ecosystem and how to get involved. It's technical but not too technical for the average reader to understand. Highly recommended

Very good, but a bit too much code. I have a programming background, so like the detail but Mastering Bitcoin hits just the right balance, whereas this is too much. The section on Solidity programming gotchas is both too long but also not exactly confidence inspiring; smart contracts need more secure programming languages and methods.

Very poor graphics quality on the printed book. Impossible to see/read what is in many of the figures. Please see example in the photo. Similar issue with code representation - faded code that hard, if not impossible to read with hardly any explanation. The last paragraph of the book says "Additional reference material follows in the appendixes." Guess what? There are NO appendixes, no references, nothing. Looks like the authors simply decide to quit writing the book and charge a hefty fee to the readers who fall for this.

Mastering Ethereum is a comprehensive introduction to Ethereum. It is meant for programmers but could be read by non-programmers as well. The writing is excellent with rich diagrams and explanations throughout. Andreas knows when to stress key points such as not exposing private keys. For any potential pitfalls there are plenty of warnings. One of the more interesting chapters was on Smart Contract Security (Chapter 9). There was a list of best practices and then code samples showing how contracts can be vulnerable if poor coding practices are used. By exposing issues with smart contracts the book presents a fully balanced view. The book is optimistic in tone, but not overly so. Chapters are well divided into sections and the book has a logical flow to it. It strikes the right balance between technical and text explanations. Comparing this to other resources out there on Ethereum, this is by far the best resource for getting into Ethereum. Video courses and the Ethereum documentation are useful, but this book goes beyond what you would expect.

Auch dieses Buch richtet sich an Entwickler. Allerdings gibt es auch einige Kapitel bei denen Programmierkenntnisse nebensächlich sind. Wenn man beispielsweise einen Full Node betreiben will, bekommt man hier auch alle relevanten Kenntnisse. Wie auch schon bei Mastering Bitcoin profitieren hier Entwickler am meisten. Man muss noch kein Solidity beherrschen, aber man sollte irgendeine moderne Programmiersprache beherrschen. Wenn man jeden Schritt nachvollzieht und nicht nur das Buch liest, dann ist man am Ende des Buchs wirklich ein Experte. Aber Vorsicht: Durcharbeiten und Lesen sind zwei verschiedene Dinge. Das Buch kostet Zeit. Aber es lohnt sich. Wie auch schon bei meiner Rezension zu "Mastering Bitcoin" der Tipp für Leute die den Autor nicht kennen: Schaut Euch auf Youtube an, was er dort veröffentlicht hat. Man bekommt einen guten Eindruck von ihm.

This is an excellent book! No fluff, just fact after fact. Topics with inevitable overlap are cleverly referenced/linked. The individual chapters, which collectively cover a vast amount of information, are nicely linked. The book provides overall continuity for someone reading it from cover to cover. It also provides excellent indexing in the back for someone who might want to jump into a particular section for help. Love how this book covers both core fundamentals and then also dives into new beta/pre-release tech like Vyper.
