James Beard Award winner * New York Times bestseller Learn Korean cooking alongside social media star Sarah Ahn as her umma passes down 100+ family recipes and decades' worth of kitchen wisdom. Sarah Ahn’s viral food videos of her and her mom have captivated millions of viewers with their behind-the-scenes look at Korean cooking and multigenerational home life. This collaboration is now a must-have cookbook blending the emotional intimacy of Crying in H Mart with practical culinary advice from Nam Soon’s lifetime of kitchen experience. The recipes are framed by mother-daughter conversations that are funny, profound, and universally relatable—plus all the food is backed by the recipe-testing power of America’s Test Kitchen. Thorough ingredient guide: Walk through a Korean grocery store with a Korean umma for in-depth guidance on what pantry ingredients and fresh produce and protein to buy. Recipes both traditional and contemporary: Learn to make everything from simple banchan, a variety of kimchi, and foundational stews to an assortment of yasik (midnight snacks) and inventive desserts. Kitchen wisdom from mother to daughter: Shared confidences open a window onto a level of family intimacy rarely seen in cookbooks. The Ahns understand that when generations come together in the kitchen, so much is shared: not only food, but also knowledge, advice, family history, and love. Review: An authentic heartfelt story through food - Excellent book. Well written, jam-packed with thorough recipes, good organization, beautiful pictures and thoughtful, heartfelt stories…what more can you ask for in a cookbook. The author’s mom’s strong independent spirit reminds me of my ex-boyfriend’s (now good friend) late mom. The latter’s was a sad love story with an American GI who suffered a mental breakdown and left the family when they arrived in the US. Anyway, this book is an authentic look into the lives of working class immigrants making a life in Los Angeles that speaks to me, not the Kdrama, K-pop culture of today. I’m Gen X and this really takes me back to the ‘90s…bittersweet. After spending over $200 at the Korean supermarket on pantry ingredients and 8 successful banchans, I can safely say, this book is the real deal…buy it! Note: I cut the sugar and Dasida beef stock powder by half and everything still turned out delicious. For the stir-fried potatoes, I cooked it a total of 4min instead of her 6min for a crunchier bite. Review: Buy it!! Christmas for each kid in your family - This is an absolutely gorgeous cookbook!! Well worth the money. It's so much more than a cookbook, its a life story and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested, even the slightest bit, in Korean food and history. I especially love the little "Umma's Kitchen Wisdom" bits. They are fantastic and absolutely spot on!! Its like Umma is in the kitchen with you telling you these nuggets of pure knowlege gold. It's how my mom taught me to cook too. This mom and daughter duo is amazing and I would support them in all they do.

A great gem to have! 💎✨🍜🥢 #Gem #KoreanCruisine❤️
This cookbook presents a compelling introduction to Korean cuisine. During my search for resources on the subject, I encountered numerous cookbooks. However, this particular volume immediately captured my interest, primarily due to its appealing presentation and the promise of authentic, home-style Korean cooking. While I did review other publications, I found myself consistently drawn back to this one. Its high quality is immediately apparent, offering not just a collection of recipes, but also a narrative with depth and character. Opening the book evokes a sense of comfort, inviting the reader to spend hours immersed in its content. The combination of stories, recipes, and detailed explanations makes this book exceptional. The quality of the photographs and the thoroughness of the recipe instructions are particularly noteworthy. The explanations of culinary techniques are also quite engaging. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to explore the rich culinary heritage of Korean cuisine. It is a book to be savored, best enjoyed with a warm beverage, from cover to cover. I am pleased to have discovered a resource that provides an engaging summer activity and a valuable learning opportunity. I trust you will find the experience of reading this book as enjoyable as I have. I am eager to begin learning new culinary skills. Greatly formatted. On top of all the recipes, there are recommended pantry ingredient lists, common prep methods, insightful stories, and communicated love of this mother and daughter pair.

Deliciously beautiful
We’ve made a few things out of this book so far. I started by watching their videos and was excited when I saw they had a book. I wanted to cook more traditional Korean dishes to connect with my Korean heritage. I love the family history incorporated along with the recipes. My husband and I have enjoyed going through it and have found it helpful while cooking for our elder Korean friend.

Klare Kaufempfehlung

Its a families' journey not just a recipe book.
This recipe book is so much more than that. It's a book written from the heart, explaining the journey from picking the right ingrediants, to how to cook them, how to serve and when. It's a families history of Korean food and what it means to them, how it comforts, soothes and nourishes not just their health but their relationships. I enjoyed just reading the book even before attempting some of the recipes. Everything is explained really well, so pretty easy to follow. I'd guess the main struggle depending in where people live will be sourcing the ingrediants. Though hopefully a little internet search can help with that. I fully recommend this book, and wish there were more recipe books like this.
