Great narrative portions, math is a slog
Found the narrative portions of the book a thoughtful and engaging journey into the subject of uncertainty. But getting through the math of it all was a slog, making it difficult to apply to everyday life.

What are the odds.....
Excellent overview of assessing strength of predictions. Lots of stats might put some readers off, but they need not be grasped to get the basic substance. Non-stat folk can easily understand the issues because of the examples and connections. Distinguishing between "probability" and "certainty" helps the lay-reader understand decision making and research. This book is a valuable antidote to media and other outlets that report research or decision making that tend to be simplistic and often erroneous.

A Little to Technical for Me
Highly technical tome on uncertainty. Great and technical explanation of why uncertainty exists - probably a little too technical for my level. Kind of like a graduate level book on uncertainty. I found Chapter 15 on making decisions and managing risks as useful and interesting as any other part of the book. It provides a summary list of considerations of making decisions under uncertainty. They are: - Complexity - Redundancy - Humility - Robustness - Resilience - Reversibility -Adaptivity After over 200 plus pages on what uncertainty is and what are its causes, I only wish that there had been more on how to make better decisions under uncertainty.

A Thoughtful Guide to Thinking Systematically About Uncertainty
David Spiegelhalter’s The Art of Uncertainty is more philosophical than a work of hardcore numerical analysis. Although it includes some quantitative discussion, the dominant narrative concerns how we ought to think about chance, ignorance, risk, and luck. The book begins from the observation that uncertainty surrounds us constantly yet is rarely examined with care. Uncertainty, Spiegelhalter argues, is not an objective property of the external world but a relationship between an observer and that world; it therefore depends on the subjective perspective, knowledge, and biases of the individual. Spiegelhalter distinguishes different kinds of uncertainty. Ontological (or deep) uncertainty arises when it is difficult even to conceive the range of possible outcomes—an example being the ways artificial intelligence may reshape work over the next five or ten years. Epistemic uncertainty, by contrast, concerns situations in which we can attach provisional values or probabilities on the basis of current knowledge or historical information. The aim is to cultivate sufficient humility to recognize these distinctions and to ascribe appropriate parameters to the risks we face. United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s well-known 2002 formulation is relevant here: “As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know.” Readers are reminded that unknown unknowns must always be kept in view. The book draws on psychological research that distinguishes “risk as feeling” from “risk as analysis.” Most people respond primarily through feeling; Spiegelhalter concentrates on the analytic path, in which careful reasoning, numbers, and statistical models help evaluate risks and uncertainties more systematically. Life is filled with uncertainties and risks. The Art of Uncertainty encourages readers to convert feeling and intuition into clearer statistical frameworks. No single volume can prescribe a complete method for every form of uncertainty, yet the book’s insistence on slowing down and thinking more systematically is itself of real value.

good, but a fair amount of math.
I have the authors first book, The Art of Statistics, so got this one. Enjoyed it but it was hard for me. Maybe a reader can help me: pages 49 to 50 describe a problem called Hannah's Sweets. I get that the probability of Hannah eating an orange sweet is 6/n, where n = the total number of sweets. We are told there are six orange sweets. But I don't get the probability that the second sweet she eats is 5/n-1. I get the n-1 but 5? Where does it say that the first sweet she ate was orange? I feel dumb.

A superb review of probability
This is a superb overview of probability theory with applications to the everyday world. It is written with the clarity and grace that distinguished the author's The Art of Statistics. A most informative and enjoyable read.

Good on probability theory and decision making
Clear concept . Read slowly to understand subtle concepts . Most interesting is chapter on exchangeablity as link between personal and objective .Practical use as a stroke consultant in making decision under uncertain situations in a few minutes.
