Can the heaters be used & store behind a sofa

Stored yes but used no, unless you just want to heat the back of the sofa.

I cannot believe the description, that this is only 1.9 kilos. All the other similar products by de Longhi are around 15 kilos. Is this a mistake?

I want to simply turn this on/off at the plug. Can this be done or do I have to use the in built programmer / switch on the device?

If you turn it off at the plug, and then turn it on again it will go to standby mode, and not either manual mode, or timer mode. So it is not possible to control this device remotely using a smart plug.
