So far so good with this review of a converter of component video to HDMI. Some people might prefer tho skip this review as it deals to some extent with the thorny issue of the relative merits of video composed from digital composite input as apposed to videos composed from analogue component input. The jury is still out on this matter!! What I have been trying to achieve is the best possible conversion of my old VHS tapes into computer generated mp4 files. The original VHS tapes had been recorded with an Amstrad camcorder during the late 1980's - early 1990's. I have now replayed some of them via a DVD recorder plus VCR. My first attempt to record them was successful in converting the composite digital 576i output of the recorder into HDMI and capturing the resultant signal with an Elgato HD60S Game Capture device to be used as input via associated software to my very capable and top of the range 2013 Macbook Pro (running Mac OsX Sierra). I was not exceptionally impressed with the resultant mp4 file as it seemed to be lacking in quality and it appeared stretched by its conversion to HDMI - whereas I wished to preserve the original 5/4 aspect ratio of the signal . ( Admittedly I could probably bring back the mp4 file to its standard definition format by using an application such as Mpeg Stream Clip - but that operation seemed a long way around). So I decided to convert the DVD recorder signal to HDMI using its five cable analogue component video output and see what transpired. I have tried this out using the HDMI converter reviewed here and I have been very pleased so far with the results as recorded via my Elgato HD60S to my Apple laptop. The resultant file as captured came out straight as an SD 768 x 576p aspect ratio and it seemed to be of higher quality with better definition and colour than anything I had previously obtained . Anyway I will carry on with this study and if anything untoward turns up I will add to the review - hopefully not in the negative.!
