Short story: I've had this razor for several weeks and finally had the real test tonight shaving my head. I started out with the #1 razor for my morning shave until working up to the #3, which is about perfect for me. It's great that I can still go up a few more for even closer shaves. Close shave with no irritation and no nicks. The razor has a thick handle and good weight so it's easy to control. This was the first time shaving my head with a single blade, so it took a bit longer but no nicks. I was hesitant to spend the $$ for the Rockwell, but it's money well spent. This will last the rest of my life. Long story: I'd been a member of dollar shave club for a number of years and while I didn't like the waste and the cost, I got a decent enough shave. They up and changed their razor style which is horrible and I started looking for options. I saw an ad on Instagram for a safety razor and I was intrigued, but after buying their razor, you had to buy their proprietary single blades. That got me thinking about an old travel razor I had inherited. I've started to become pretty disillusioned with all the marketing of what amounts to disposable products. This IG advertised safety razor was selling the concept of old single blade shaving, but by buying their razor you're tied to using their blades at a buck apiece. Sure, it's better than the multi-blade razors that are expensive and filling up landfills, but with how inexpensive the double edge blades are, why did we ever stop doing it the old way? I bought the Astra blades - a pack of 100 for $8.50 - and was already way ahead of that advertised brand. The travel razor I have is vintage, but still in pretty good shape. It's small though and not much to it. I got a really nice shave with it, even though I had to endure a few nicks and abrasions until I got the hang of it. I stuck with it and it was doing the job, but I already knew I was already going down the rabbit hole. I won an auction for a vintage Gillette adjustable razor. It was just about $25, which is a decent price. I discovered that the popular vintage razors can set you back $100 or more. So, the one I bought was reasonably priced, but as it turned out there was no setting I could use that didn't cause at least a fair amount of abrasions or a few nicks. I was already looking at another vintage razor when I decided to research new razors. I looked into the Merkur and Muhle, but ultimately settled on the Rockwell. I didn't know just how well the interchangeable plates would work, but it's a pretty simple and effective design. As I said, the razor has a nice weight to it - most of that comes from the plates. I started with the #1 and it did a decent job, but it took a few passes to get a close shave. The #2 was better. The #3 though has been the sweet spot for my daily shave, but I may end up moving up to the 4 for head shaves. Again, I like the flexibility of the different plates to find the perfect setup. Overall, I'm quite happy with the Rockwell and while I was starting to get into the vintage razors and potentially collecting, I have no reason to now. Happily.

Unboxing: The razor is nicely packaged in a sturdy cardboard box with a plastic molded insert to hold the razor parts along with a two sided instruction sheet explaining how to use the adjustable bases. Despite not being stainless steel like its sibling 6S model, the 6C is still impressive and hefty due to being made of solid Zamak metal parts. Don’t let the use of Zamak turn you off this razor, the finish is quality and I doubt I’ll ever use the included lifetime warranty. My scale reports it weighs in at a respectable 97.4 grams (almost double the weight of my G Slim Adjustable). The finish is perfect, I could find no flaws in the finish on the handle, cap or the included bases. The razor not only looks nice, but feels great in my hand. The handle has just enough knurling in the grip to provide traction for wet fingers while not biting into your fingers. The handle length of 85mm / 3.35in is, in my opinion, neither too long nor too short which keeps it nimble when shaving. The side of the base-plate you face outward during assembly will determine the razor’s blade gap. While there are only three bases included, each side of the base-plate is designed to provide a different gap setting. The Base-plates are paired as follows: (R1/R3), (R2/R4), (R5/R6) - with R1 being the least aggressive, and R6 being the most aggressive blade settings. The razor's cap (top of the razor that secures the DE blade in place once attached to the handle) uses a post type system to secure the DE blades - there is no wobble or play anywhere in the razor once assembled. The Shave: My prior razor weighed only 58.5 grams, so I had developed a habit over 30+ years of applying some pressure while shaving. I had to quickly unlearn that habit as the natural heft of the 6C is all that is needed. I was immediately impressed by how easily the entire assembly glided across my face - absolutely zero drag/friction from the cap was experienced. The base plate design also includes three generous channels on each side that allow the shaved slurry of soap and hair to easily exit the gap space between the blade and base plate. A quick pass under the faucet removes any remaining remnants of shaving. Once dialed in with the right base-plate for your face, it's very smooth sailing with this razor! Base-Plate Selection Process: During my initial research, I had incorrectly assumed that the R6 base would probably be the only one I used since all the blade gap data I could find online indicated it was a bit less of a gap (aka less aggressive) than my Slim Adjustable on the “7” setting. In fact, I was actually worried it would not be aggressive enough to remove the barbed wire I call facial hair and that I’d ultimately regret my purchase. I also vaguely remember reading somewhere on one of the shaving forums not to go by just the blade gap for comparisons - and after months of use I completely agree. I found that both the R6 and R5 bases resulted in nicks and weepers despite having less gap than my Slim on the higher settings. I also re-confirmed this result by using the R5 base-plate again after using the razor for a couple of months to eliminate that my early technique was the cause of my weepers. The second attempt with the R5 base produced similar outcomes, although admittedly not as many nicks. It would appear that the blade gap alone is not the complete story on this design. Ultimately, I have found that for me, the R4 base resulted in a very consistent and forgiving BBS shave when using the three pass method (with, cross and against grain). Un-rushed, with the R4 base I get no weepers, and only occasionally experience any skin scrapes/irritation when the aftershave was applied. I can also get the same with the R3 plate and shave much faster, but I typically have to do a few spot clean ups if I go down to that base-plate. I really encourage anyone who purchases this razor to go ahead and start with the R1 base and then progress to the next base only after completing a full 3 pass shave. When you hit that base that causes weepers and discomfort, go back down and you’ve probably found your sweet spot. After you have been shaving with this for several weeks, check again and adjust up & down at least one more time to be sure you’re still on the right one. Keep in mind the goal isn’t to see who can survive the most aggressive razor, but rather which setting results in a great shave with minimal discomfort/damage to your face. Conclusion: IMO, this was money well spent! I have absolutely ZERO complaints about this razor, how it performed once dialed in, or the quality of the product. I did invest into three minor accessories that were not included. A good storage case (I’m not a fan of storing things in a cardboard box near wet areas), a blade cover, and a razor stand to keep it handy and neatly stored out of the way when not in use. I agree with Rockwell’s decision to not bundle them in and raise the cost as not everyone wants these things. Thankfully, they are all available either through Rockwell or a third party, I was able to purchase the matching gunmetal grey base from Rockwell via Amazon, the razor leather protective sleeve from a 3rd party since Rockwell didn’t have theirs available on Amazon (*Hint hint), and I purchased a 3rd party Large storage tin on another site for small vendors that functions as both a storage place for the unused bases and it will also work as a travel case for my razor the next time I hit the road <- Something I do wish Rockwell produced. While this will not replace my straight razor, I do find myself using it in rotation with it and much prefer using this Razor over my straight to shave my neck. Self-shaving your own neck with a straight razor is.... exciting... Unless I find something better (I'm considering also picking up the 6S), this razor will also be my trusty fall back when I get old enough that my hands betray me and can no longer use a straight razor. If you were on the fence about trying a DE razor - this is a great choice that will spoil you due to the adjustable bases (which MOST DE razors do not have). If you’re an old DE veteran like me (G Slim Adjustable on “7” for decades), you also won't be disappointed. If you’re frugal, and spending two times the cost of this razor for the Rockwell 6S is out of the question - you'll be happy knowing you got the same build (different metal) at half the price. Update 23 Nov 2020 - The Year of Covid19 and unemployment – In just a few months it will have been two years since I purchased the Rockwell 6c (back in March 2019), and I can still say with confidence it was a great purchase that I would do again if I somehow lost my current 6S. Since using a straight razor requires a lot more prep time, I’ve found in the last year I use the Rockwell 6S for at least four out of five shaves these days. It still works just a well as it did on day one, and I’m still very impressed with the design details like the generous exit channels in the base plates. I have swapped out the base plate on that rare occasion where I have switched to a different Mfg DE Blade if it was nicking or just not cutting close enough, but had I stayed with one brand – that would not have been necessary. I’m just glad it included so many plates so I could still use the blades once dialed in again.

***FIRST LOOK*** I hadn't shaved with a double-edged (DE) razor since the early 1960s, but that changed recently with the purchase of the Henson DE razor. It is an excellent product, and I have been very happy with it. The fixed 30-degree angle provides a clean shave without any cuts, nicks, or blood. However, I started looking for a razor that was slightly more aggressive, and based on my research, selected the Rockwell 6C. I've only had the Rockwell for one day, so this will be a preliminary look. I will update my observations after I have had a month or two to properly test it. First, let's talk about the reasonable price of this classy razor. The chrome finish is beautiful, and while it is considerably heavier than my aluminum Henson, that weight gives the Rockwell a solid, balanced, heavy-duty feel, making shaving quite comfortable. Several purchasers online suggested starting with the 1 or 2 settings, but I found them to be too mild for my taste, so I ended up using setting 4 initially. I must admit that I experienced one tiny nick, but I suspect the blades that came with the razor were the culprit, as I normally use Astra blades. Since I shave every day, I will give this razor a thorough workout. For now, I am giving the Rockwell 6C a 5-star rating and consider it an excellent addition to my daily shaving routine. I am still evaluating the Rockwell Stainless Steel blades, but I am very happy with the Astra blades and will review the Rockwell blades shortly.

Final Edit: About a week after I wrote my earlier edit of this review, Rockewell responded to my emails by saying they were shipping out a replacement unit. I just got that one today and it looks perfect. So, I'm upping my rating to a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. With the gap between the razor and the blade now the same on both sides, I'm very happy with the razor. It's really nice to have the adjustment blocks for people like me who are just starting out with safety razors. I'm using just the "3" block (I get no nicks or cuts with that) and get a much better shave than I did with my old cartridge razor. Plus, it's cheaper. EDIT 1: It's now 17 January 2020 and I'm giving up on Rockwell and this razor. They made an attempt at fixing the "blade gap not the same on both sides" problem by shipping me a replacement handle. That handle made no difference. So, I sent them another email asking if they have another fix or if I should return the razor for a refund. When they failed to reply after two days, I sent another similar email and, again, got no reply. Because Rockwell has, apparently, left me hanging out to dry, I'm changing my rating to a Bad 1 star out of 5. If you do buy this razor, I highly recommend the very first thing you do is put in the "1" plate and check that the gap on both sides of the head is the same. If it is, you're good. If it's not, immediately return the whole thing for a refund. And, here's a summary timeline of my process: - 12/27/2019: Received razor - 12/28/2019: Sent an email to Rockwell saying "...the blade gap is not the same on both sides of the razor (see attached photo). Without a blade, I see no obvious roughness or mis-alignment. The blade seems to fit just fine, doesn't shift if tilted while the handle is loose, and seems to be centered (since flipping it around doesn't change the big/little gap sides on the razor). That implies the blade is fine and the posts are centered. Reversing/flipping the adjustment bars also makes no difference in the big/little gap sides on the razor. All three adjustment bars also show the same difference in gap (one side of the razor has a blade gap approximately twice that of the other side). All of that implies the adjustment bars are fine. Looking down the length of the razor head, it looks like it's possible that the curvature of the head is non-symmetrical and that's causing the gap difference. Is this normal? With the way this is, I'd have to keep track of which side of the razor I'm using since the shave will be vastly different from one side of the razor to the other (with the #1 adjustment bar shown in the photo, one side of the razor is unusable since there's almost no gap)...." - 01/03/2020: Rockwell responded and offered me a replacement handle. - 01/05/2020: Replacement handle shipped to me. - 01/13/2020: Received the replacement handle, tested it, found it made no difference, emailed Rockwell telling them that and asked if they had another solution or if I should refund the razor. - 01/15/2020: No reply from Rockwell after two days, so I sent another email. - 01/17/2020: Again, no reply from Rockwell after two more days. OP: This is a tentative review of the " Rockwell Razors 6C Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor in Gunmetal ." I've shaved only once using the starting "1" plate and the shave was fine: no nicks or cuts, no difficulties shaving, and the result is better than the multi-bladed shaves I was getting before. But, I can only shave with one side of the razor. If you look at the photo I've uploaded, you'll see that the spacing of the blade is not the same on both sides of the razor. I've taken the thing apart multiple times and reseated everything. But, on one side, the blade has a gap which can actually be used to shave with, while on the other side, the blade goes right down to the base of the razor. Shaving on that side results in nothing happening. It's basically just smooth metal sliding along my skin. I'm going to research this some more and check the other adjustment plates (perhaps its an issue with the actual blade instead of the razor), but right now, the best I can rate this razor is an OK 3 stars out of 5.

I traded in a Qshave (a Merkur Futur clone) for the Rockwell 6C because, even at its lowest setting, the Qshave caused nicks and irritation on my neck. I have a coarse, thick beard, and this razor solved the problem from the very first use. Using plate 2, I shave every other day, combining with-the-grain, cross-grain, and against-the-grain strokes depending on the area. The result is a flawless shave, with zero irritation and not a single cut, using a used Dorco blade and liquid soap as shaving cream. It has a good grip; although it feels a bit heavy at first, you get used to it very easily, and its own weight helps it glide without needing to apply pressure. The only area for improvement is that the side edges of the blade protrude slightly from the head, something to be mindful of when maneuvering near the ears or nose. It’s a great purchase for finding the right level of aggressiveness, refining your technique, and eventually moving on to something more precise. Highly recommended.

Since the pandemic, I've been trying to rock the bald look (especially since I was balding). I've tried multi-blade razors and electric shavers which didn't workout. The multi-blade razors gave me too many razor bumps and nicks. The electric one I had specifically for bald dudes (a pitbull one) would require many passes over my head for a close shave and only last a year or so with only weekly use and for something that costs $200, I expected more, much more. I saw a Van Der Hagen safety razor and Wal-Mart and decided to give it a try and I was happy... for a while. I found I liked the close shave a safety razor could give me, but my Van Der Hagen didn't last a year. I was going to get another one but decided to check online to see what others used and the name Rockwell came up a lot. I was hesitant to drop $60 on a safety razor (after getting burned on expensive electric shavers), but the reviews were pretty positive, so I bit the bullet. And I'm so glad I did. This thing is amazing. The 3 different heads provide 6 different levels of shaving. I thought I'd be switching them in and out depending on the length of my hair but once I found the right one (I use 6), I've been able to just stick with that. The razor has a good weight to it which feels nice to hold but not so heavy that it's tiring. The grip is nice and doesn't feel like it will slip out of my hand. The gunmetal chrome finish looks nice and polished. Feels and glides so smoothly over my skin. This razor is definitely worth it!

I stoped using the Supply Single Edge Max and bought this amazing razor. Its night and day comparison...really. I combined the Rockwell 6c with the Feather blades. The shave is beyond perfection. It is way cheaper from other alternatives out there and it is far superior than almost everything else i have tried. Not only you save money but also you get the smoothest and cleaner shave ever. The razor is pretty balanced, with a precise blade alignment and heavy enough to just glide it on your skin to do the fantastic job it does. No force needed, just let it glide and you have the best shave! I use number 6 because I like deep shave. So far only this razor has achieved the deep clean shave I need. Skin feels perfect like a baby afterwards. I did not even used a pro cream or brush, just Barbasol mentol foam and it worked flawlessly. No cuts, no blood, no irritation, none of that other razor issues. I also soap the razor with a tooth brush after every shave to keep it clean and shiny so it can last more because I saw that it is recommended on some youtube videos. What an amazing product. I could not be happier with this fantastic product. Absolutely recommend to everyone!!!

I have a Viking Emperor adjustable razor, and it was a good razor till it became corroded and the base metal wore off and I started getting shaving irritation. After much research, I decided to try the Rockwell 6C and the reviews DID NOT disappoint! If this is your first time using a safety razor, I suggest you start out using side 1 of plate 1 till you get about 6 months of experience with it, then flip that plate over and go to side 2 for about 6 months, then exchange the plate for the next one up and use side 3 for 6 months, then go to side 4 for 6 months, after that it's up to you if you want to try side 5 or 6, must people after experience will use side 4 or 5 depending on the coarseness of the beard. Some blades may require you to go up or down a number, you won't know till you use a blade and get a sense of how it's cutting. Once you find a blade you really like, stay with it, then you don't have to guess about which plate/side to use. As the reviews said, this razor gives an extremely smooth shave, and nearly impossible to get a nick, I don't want to say impossible but so far, I haven't gotten a single nick which with the old razor I would get at least one every time I shaved. This razor uses plates instead of a butterfly system to adjust the blade pitch for closeness, and while having to change plates is a bit of a hassle vs twisting a knob, the pitch is consistent with the plates which is why it shaves so smoothly while the butterfly system cannot do that as well...according to reviews. That type of system makes swapping blades a bit of a hassle vs butterfly styles, but I am more than willing to put up with that hassle in exchange for the extremely smooth irritation and nick-free shave I'm getting. Blade choice is a personal thing, unfortunately, you have to try a lot of different ones till you find the one that works best for you and your razor. According to the reviews, the stainless steel (S) version could last longer, but it's not as smooth shaving as the chrome plated (C) version according to reviews, but the S version is made in the USA, and the C version is engineered in the USA but made in China. I wish that Rockwell would bring the production of the C version back to the USA, but I opted for the C version because of the reported smoothness of the shave over the C. I opted for the gunmetal chrome version, and I'm glad I did, I think it looks better than the white chrome, but that's subjective. I seriously doubt that I could find a better shaver at any price, I might find an equal one but I would pay a lot more money for it. I strongly suggest potential buyers to read the reviews that are all over the internet on this razor and not the reviews here on Amazon, a lot of user error reports taint products that are good products. I read some of the complaints on this razor, some said the blades didn't align properly, could have been a manufacturer error, or a user error, all I know is mine aligns perfectly all the time, I think there were issues with the first batch of these razors, which if mine is any indication they seem to have corrected the problems. Another had problems screwing it together, mine goes together smoothly, again that could have been due to the first batch not being made well in China. Another one said it wasn't as good as a disposable, actually, it's superior to a disposable, so his issue is user error. It does take some time to learn how to shave with a safety razor, and even longer with a straight blade. One reviewer said it cut his face up, which is completely user error. This person was probably pressing into his face with it like you would with a multi-blade razor, you can't press into the beard, you have to let the weight of the razor itself press against the skin, no additional force is necessary. I have been using a safety razor for about 3 years, with other razors I had I would nick myself about once a shaving session, I haven't nicked myself once yet with the Rockwell. You also have to take short 1-inch strokes, and not drag the razor across the entire face as you can do with a multi-bladed razor. Watching You Tube videos on how to shave with a safety razor is immensely helpful. Another said it wasn't suitable for certain sensitive skin types, well tell that to the billions of men who used those razors for 20-plus years before the multi-bladed systems became more popular, and there are still a lot of men using them today which is why there are so many choices of safety razors on the market now, you could barely find these things 15 years ago, now suddenly the market is flooded with them and the prices have come down, so they are becoming popular again. Some people complained it broke when it fell on the bathroom floor, most bathroom floors are tile, so just about anything you drop on tile is going to get damaged or broken, the solution to that is not to drop it! I would rather have the razor break than chip the floor, just saying.

Best adjustable razor I've tried. Tried over 50 razors through the years. None of the adjustable ones could convince. Including the Rockwell T2. But this one, even though swapping the heads isn't super intuitive, actually offers you flexibility that works. The 6S is the same basically. It's more premium in every way, including the weight, grip and It has a timeless look with that SS material and look. But price wise you can't beat this 6C, where the chrome finish also offers a more gliding surface for theoretical better shaving experience. It shaves very smooth with a head that's not as bulky as the T2 for instance for more control and precision and big lanes to flush through the hairs, soap and water to cut even through heavy hair. But, the included Rockwell DE blades are simply horrible. They should be ashamed to put their name on these. They're the worst of the worst. Like the basic cheap Lord knifes level.
