Fun Way to Slim Down and Strengthen Core!
As I mentioned in a previous review, I love hula hoops. I don't see hula hoops as a form of exercise, although they are. This hoop is easy to assemble, and you can even travel with it. It is especially great for people like me, where any weight you gain goes straight to your waistline. This hula hoop really is a workout! It helps to trim your waistline, shed pounds, and strengthen your core so you can feel more confident going into activities like Pilates - if that's your thing. Just like the arm hoops, you will feel soreness after using this Hoop since it is a weighted hoop. If you can keep up a normal hoop, you will be able to keep this one up. If you can't, well then, practice makes perfect. I find that wider, heavier hoops are easier for me to hold up. You have to work through the soreness to see results, just like you would with a regular gym workout. Start small, with short periods of time per day to get used to the Hoop, and eventually build your way up. I really wanted the hoop that has those tennis ball-like nodules (although those are painful, I feel that those give you results over a shorter period of time if you can handle the pain) but I wasn't able to find them. This turned out to be a great substitute! I'm happy with my purchase and I feel like I'm 10 years old all over again when using this product!

Fun and easy to stick with it - you'll see results!
I've been using this 3-4 times per week for over two years now. It stays together, shows no signs of wear, and I still love using it! I bought this because I wanted to tone my abs without doing crunches. Using this hoop, I saw noticeable results within the first month. It has improved my overall core strength. I started out at just a few minutes per day and did experience some bruising while I was getting used to it. You need a lot of space to use this hoop! There are very few places in the house where I can use this without bumping in to a piece of furniture, a counter, or some other obstacle. If you have teenage sons, they WILL think you look ridiculous, so it is probably best to do this when they aren't home! After using the hoop for a few months, I settled on a routine that I enjoy, that seems to work a variety of muscles. This is how I use it with an intervals app on my phone (2:40 per motion) and time goes really fast -- * feet together hoop around waist * left foot forward hoop around waist * right foot forward hoop around waist * wide stance hoop around waist * wide stance hoop around buttocks * feet together hoop around buttocks * start over again with hoop going the other direction I didn't use the DVD because I prefer to read or watch TV while using it. Sometimes I bend my knees a little, change speed, or raise/lower the hoop slightly. Sometimes I rotate my hips, and other times I move left to right or front to back. Honestly I don't give it much thought, except when the intervals app reminds me it is time to switch my feet or hoop location. Last week, my rebounder was already out when I was ready to hula hoop. Instead of moving it out of the way, I stepped on and started to work through my routine. WOW! I didn't think I would make it through! It works more muscles and makes it a whole lot more difficult, but still fun. I'd recommend this only after you're happy with using your hula hoop and are looking to enhance your workout. Buy this, and have fun!

Great piece of exercise equipment for a fun and challenging workout
I've loved hula hooping since I was a kid--I used to win blue ribbons on Field Day for keeping it up the longest. I'd recently been using a toy hoop to exercise for extended periods of time (I'd alternate clockwise and counterclockwise every couple minutes, for 20+ minutes) but I wanted more of a challenge, so I bought this weighted (3 lb.) hoop. It was, as many others have mentioned, a bit challenging to assemble it initially--it was hard to make sure that the pieces click in place properly. I just rolled back the foam on each of the pieces to make sure that each insertable end clicked into place (then rolled the foam back into place). When you try to pull the pieces apart, they should not budge at all; that's how you know it's ready to go. This hoop is several inches larger in diameter than my toy one, so it looked a bit intimidating, but if you're familiar with hooping in the first place then you should be able to keep it up. At first it felt funny--I tried for a few seconds and it tickled so I had to stop since it was making me laugh. Once I composed myself, though, I tried again and was able to keep it up for a couple minutes. After that, it does start to feel a little uncomfortable from the pressure against your sides and ribs--on the box, it recommends no more than 3 minutes a day for beginners. Since I had been doing hooping and other core exercises, though, I tried it for a while longer (two separate 4-minutes sessions) later and found it fun and challenging. It's cool that weighted hoops actually move more slowly around than the lightweight, toys ones, so it's easier to try things like turning around in a circle as the hoop moves around you. I wouldn't recommend buying this if you've never hula hooped in your life; it takes a certain amount of core strength and coordination to be able to keep it up, especially a weighted one. But if you are already reasonably fit and know how to swivel your hips to keep up the hoop's rotation, then this is a good product to buy to give you a more challenging core workout. It's great to do while you watch TV (you need at least 5 or 6 square feet of space to have room to use this); you can increase the duration of use weekly but it says never to exceed 20 minutes at a time. The initial discomfort of using this wore off after a few days. The day after I first tried it, my sides were so sore that it hurt to try it again that day. But I gradually built up the duration of my workouts with this, and now I often do 30 minutes a day, in ten-minute intervals, still alternating direction every couple minutes (I intersperse the 10-minute sessions with weightlifting and resistance band moves). I found it has definitely built up my core strength, and I still enjoy using this a few times a week. Update: 11 years later and I still have this thing and use it all the time. The foam has gotten slightly dented here and there (probably from my bumping into things in my small apartment) but nothing that affects the functionality at all. It fits in my closet when I want it out of the way. Clearly itโs been a great investment, since I love to hula hoop! Update again: Itโs 2023, and I still use this all the time. Only the few minor dents in the foam, but the frame is very sturdy snd does not fall apart. I love hooping while watching my favorite shows. Some variations I try are light jogging while hooping, standing on one leg for as long as I can while hooping, letting the hoop drop from my waist to my hips (which means you have to keep up a faster pace to maintain the rotation), walking around a bit as my space allows, side lunges, and arm circles while (you guessed it) hooping.

Hooping for exercise
I received this 3 days ago with ZERO previous ability to actually hula hoop. Today, after two and a half days of practicing, I was able to successfully keep the hoop from falling for at least one minute. Huge strides for me - practice makes perfect! This is a great product so far. I had no problem with assembly, just make sure everything really snaps together - try pulling apart each piece after you connect them to double check. The foam covering is already getting ripped - but that's my fault for having very little space and knocking it into the corner of a wall a few times. I am still giving a four star review until I have it for a few more months to update this review. I haven't bruised - yet. I bruise very easily and feel like I may have bruises show up over the weekend. It is a real ab workout so far. Since I have made great strides, I imagine like anything else with practice my body will get used to it and gain strength in my core.

Hula hoop!
This is a fun workout for all ages, whenever I get this out to use it the kids are all jumping for joy so they can try it as well. Iโm not too sure it is working in the โtrimmingโ aspect but it is fun. Pretty easy to put together.

Meh...
While looking up jump ropes, I came across weighted jump ropes and then weighted hula hoops. I read the reviews from other customers and looked at the hula exercise videos, which seemed like a neat exercise toy. When the item finally arrived, "easy to assemble/disassemble" proved mostly true. All the connectors snapped into place and popped into their sockets... except one. The connectors have a button to press, then slide into the next connector, finding the depression and popping back out to secure them together. I could not get one to pop back out, which definitely resulted in the hula hoop coming apart a few times before I had to ask my boyfriend to take a look. He fiddled with it and finally got it to pop, so I went back to try it again. So, I mentioned earlier that I read prior reviews... some had said using this hoop hurts and others said not. In my experience, OUCH! Think of your natural waistline getting hit over and over again with 3lbs as the hoop swings around. A few minutes and I definitely didn't want to continue. I tried this again over a few days and eventually figured out that if you use the hula hoop lower down (just above your pelvic bones) rather than your waist, it doesn't hurt much. I'm not sure what impact this has for exercise or if the point is to just keep moving. Also, it is a large hula hoop that swings around. Mine measures more than a yard in diameter (around 40in.), so you would need a very large open space to use this toy. If you only think that there's probably someplace in your house that would work, look around first before you buy or consider using it outside. Would I buy this again? Probably not. I'm not sure what benefits it actually has for toning muscles, especially with the possible variances on use or if only 10 min a day actually does anything. It's a neat toy, but I don't see actually doing it consistently or long term.

Weighted Hula Hoop
My hula hoop arrived approximately four days before its due date. Woo Hoo! I've read plenty of the reviews and I decided to go with the one without the ridges, and I am so happy that I did this too. The weighted hula hoop looked exactly like the pictures and it was very easy to piece together. I pushed in the pieces and listened for the clicks. My hula hoop hasn't come apart and this is good. Unfortunately, I have no idea of how to take it apart. Anyhow, it took me about 30 minutes of my time to figure out how to keep this weighted hula hoop up in the air. You know what they say, right? Practice makes perfect! Well, now my hula hooping abilities in the last three days are becoming perfect. I am having so much fun with this hula hoop. I should've bought this a long long long time ago. Shame on me! I've managed to use my hula hoop in the opposite direction. This is the easiest and most fun cardio workout that I have had in awhile. Seriously! I can hula hoop fast and slow it down.(LOL) I feel certain that this weighted hula hoop will help me in trimming down my waistline. It's just too much fun to not pick it up and use on a regular basis. The only down side is that I did not listen to the folks in the reviews when they all said to pace yourselves with it the first day or two. I ended up getting very sore because I caught on very fast with the hula hoop and kept going, going, and going. Now after a day of relaxing, I am back at it again and I am no longer sore. So, definitely listen to your body and take it easy the first day or two. Use it maybe 10 to 15 minutes like everyone states. You'll get plenty more opportunities to swirl that hula hoop again. I hope to repost in two to three weeks time and give you an update on my waistline and fitness level. Thanks! ;-)
