Q: Do you have to open it to see steps?

The picture shows it open, where the steps are shown, and also closed, where you can't see the steps so yes, just like the really helpful and clear picture, you have to open it to see the steps.

Q: After 2 years, my Yamax 200 is no longer accurate. Can I buy a new battery?

I know that you can change the battery but I have never been able to do it myself. Am on my 4th or 5th one as I have either lost or not been able to change them myself. One I bought was faulty and I returned it and they said they had changed the battery. Good luck

Q: can it convert the steps into miles / km walked ?

This one measures steps and nothing more. If worn correctly it is very accurate. This I discovered by trail and error. I wear it on my belt on my right side, immediately above the pocket - of a standard pair of trousers. This will be further back than for a standard pair of jeans.I use it to monitor another step counter that does have distance (Km), calories and aerobic paces that I wear in the pocket below the SW 200.

Yes , it has two very reliable hooks which attache to your waistband. It has never fallen off.
