How many places do you need to measure to make the calculation? (Just the side, or leg and back as well?)

for men its chest abdominal and thigh, for women its tricep,iliac crest and thigh.Make the measurements on thr right side of the body,pull out the skin and place the caliper approx 1- 2 cm away from thumb and finger. perpendicular to skinfold halfway between the crest and the base of the fold.

Does anyone have tips on using this? I followed the guide in the book, but if I wait 5 minutes and do it again, I get a completely different result!

You must make sure you are taking measurements in the EXACT same places every time. Also, if you are very obese (your body fat percentage is above 40%) then the differences your getting may be from extracellular water shifting. The best time to take these measurements is right after waking up in the morning AFTER going to the bathroom to eliminate urine. If you are experiencing the water shifting then just go with your first readings and continue to lose body fat. Also, since taking these measurements is a bit of a skill, make sure you have the same person taking them each time and again in the same spots. If all else fails, take the calipers to your doctors office or chiropractors office and ask them to take the measurements and show you if you are doing anything wrong. Good Luck!

It doesn't matter, all skin fold calipers come down to the user. I've used $15 calipers and $350 calipers and got the same results.

Expensive for what it is

I realise maybe this wasn't meant for me but it's very hard to see your own measurements, it's very big, it's quite hard to get consistent measurements anyways. All things considered maybe it's better and even cheaper to buy an electric body composition measurement tool. Like one in scales.
