Oh where, oh where, have you been all my life?!
Oh my gosh. If I'd known how well salad spinners worked, I would have bought one years ago. I had no idea what I was missing. My usual routine is to rinse my lettuce and use umpteen paper towels to absorb the excess water so I don't wind up with salad swimming in a puddle of watery dressing in the bottom of my salad bowl. I can't believe how well this spinner works - not only on lettuce, but other small vegetables and fruits. Other than lettuce, I rinsed and spun two pounds ( in two different spin sessions) of chopped asparagus. Perfect! The plastic spinner has three components: a white locking lid with a green crank and a green lock, one green slotted colander, one larger clear collection bowl with 3 rubber pads on the bottom to prevent sliding. The lid and bottom base/collection bowl are made of hard plastic, while the green plastic strainer has some flexibility. Operating instructions are easy: 1. Place food in strainer and rinse under faucet (note: there's also a hole in the lid if you want to pour water into the locked device) 2. Place strainer inside clear collection bowl, aligning indentation on strainer bottom on top of raised spindle on bottom of clear bowl 3. Place lid on top. Lock all components in place using the green clip 4. Rotate the crank until all water has been extracted 5. Tip locked bowl sideways over the sink with grated section at the bottom to drain water OR - unlock the lid, remove the strainer, pour extracted water in collection bowl down the drain ************************************** The spinner operated smoothly with excellent results. It was sturdy enough to withstand all the movement and even remained stationary while spinning without manually holding it in place (although I definitely don't recommend this... I just wanted to test the limits!) After I had finished spinning my salad, I placed servings into individual bowls. If we'd had company, I would have used the clear bowl as the serving dish. It's attractive enough to pass as a salad bowl, and it's one less dish to wash! The leftover salad was stored in a ziploc bag with a paper napkin. Because it had so much less moisture than my pre-spinner days, it stayed fresh for twice as long. Yay! Less waste! Cleanup was easy, and my three-quart spinner (which accommodated generous portions for just two people) was stored neatly on my pantry shelf. Icons on the clear label on the bowl indicate this spinner is made of food-safe plastic, could be recycled (rules may differ between recycling locations), and if you're unable to recycle - conscientiously dispose of it in a waste receptacle. Do I recommend this? You bet I do! It's awesome, it's affordable, and it would make a perfect gift for a wedding or someone moving into their first apartment. But first - buy one for yourself ๐!
