This books is meant for writing a paper and it drives home the point from page one. The exercises in the book are immensely helpful and so are the models for different sections of a paper. Writing a paper used to be a nightmare for me. This book has certainly helped me alleviate the fear. I have used few other writing manuals, such as Strunk and White, before. While they are excellent at pointing out what to do, they fail to motivate the reasons behind the commandment. This is also where this book excels. In every chapter, the author analyzes test cases and explains the reasons behind using a particular tense or a particular voice. As an ESL student, these clarifications are extremely helpful and enlightening to me. In conclusion, I definitely recommend buying this book. Review: Great resources for international students in sciences - I work with graduate students in the sciences and many of the students (both international and non) struggle with writing. This book gives a nice overview of writing in the sciences by going through each of the sections of a standard scientific paper (introduction, Methods, Results, Abstract, etc). Within each section there are grammar and vocabulary tips, which are great for non-native speakers and features from template phrases to help add structure and variety to writing. This is intended for students with a high level of English skills (definitely not for beginners - I would say high-intermediate and advanced level only).

useful for non-native English speakers
This is the first book that I have bought on science research writing. I browsed through the contents of other similar books online on Amazons and found that most of them seemed a little complicated to use. I bought this book for my students who are postgraduate students from China. The book is very useful for non-native speakers, it explains with examples and the lists of vocabularies are clear and easy to use.

Two thumbs up!
This book will be an excellent addition to a lab 'library' or for individual purchase by a student. Clearly laid out with practical advice on what, and what not, to do in scientific writing. Not useful just for the non-native speaker of English, but also for students whose native language is English. Money well spent.

Non-native speaker向けに科学英語ライティングを教えてきた著者によるガイド本です。とても分かりやすい自習書です。 【主要目次】 * Introduction: How to Use This Book * How to Write an Introduction * Writing about Methodology * Writing about Results * Writing the Discussion/Conclusion * Writing the Abstract * Appendices 英語論文の各章(abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion/conclusion)をどういう話の流れで書くのか、その時によく用いられる構文(言い回し)や単語の解説、文法的な注意事項(例:時制によるニュアンスの持たせ方、冠詞の使い分け…)、等々、よく練られた解説が読めます。とくに論旨の運び方は学ぶところがありますね。"Show your reader the wall before you begin to examine the bricks."(話の全体像を見せてから 詳細に入るべし、という意味)は、科学論文に限らず口頭発表の際でも重要ですね。

I really learnt a lot of things that I did not know about writing in english. Additionally, I think it can really help for those like me non-native speakers of english that need to write papers.
