Cynar 70 cl, 16.5% ABV - Italian Bitter Artichoke Amaro Liqueur

I adore this lovely Italian bitter! Cynar’s unique artichoke flavor adds such a delightful twist to cocktails. I tried using it instead of Aperol in a spritz, and it was absolutely delicious—less sweet, more complex, and totally refreshing. A fantastic alternative for spritz lovers!

I recently watched the film Rose Island which is the true story of a shortlived micronation in the Adriatic Sea just off the east coast of Italy near Rimini. Set in the swinging 1960s it was a bit like The Boat that Rocked in that this was the story of a set of idealistic individuals who wanted to form a party republic under their own hedonistic ideals. And throughout the film, the drink of choice was something called Cynar. I must admit I had never seen or heard of this before but was intrigued to try it. When I heard it was a bitter liqueur made from artichokes I was not certain but when I tasted it for the first time, with soda, lemon and ice, it was like entering a new and existing world of discovery. I have never tasted anything like this. It is herby and bitter and sweet and distinctive and delicious. I suspect that this will not be to everyone's taste but it is certainly to mine and I love it so much I might just declare a breakaway state and insist that everyone who enters drinks this fantastic concoction. Made from 13 different herbs and owned by the Campari group, this is as authentically Italian as you can get. Amazing stuff. Five stars.

Whilst this is a popular aperitif in Italy it is not as common in the UK. It has a more bitter taste than other aperitifs with an after taste of artichokes. It is used that same way as others with a mix of 3 parts prosecco, 2 parts aperitif and 1 part soda.

The daddy of all Italian aperitives ... bitter sweet. Perhaps not for the uncultured palate. Nonetheless a superb bit of tipple ...

I have been a Campari drinker for years but this is better. It's my favourite drink at the moment. I drink it with a couple of ice cubes, a slice of orange and a splash of soda (but not too much!). Perfect for a pre-dinner drink or two! A little too bitter for my wife, who prefers punt e mes. I ordered through Amazon because it seems impossible to find in the shops.

Ho acquistato questo Cynar con un’idea abbastanza precisa: cercavo un liquore dal profilo classico, riconoscibile, senza sorprese o reinterpretazioni particolari, e volevo verificare se fosse ancora capace di offrire quella sensazione tradizionale che ci si aspetta da un nome storico. Dopo averlo provato, posso dire che la mia impressione è stata molto positiva. È un prodotto che mantiene bene la propria identità e che, almeno per me, risponde esattamente a ciò che promette: essere buono e classico. La prima cosa che ho apprezzato è proprio la coerenza del suo carattere. Non ho trovato un gusto che cercasse di stupire con effetti speciali, e questo, nel suo genere, è un pregio. Ci sono prodotti che puntano tutto sull’impatto immediato, mentre qui ho avuto la sensazione di trovarmi davanti a un liquore costruito su un’impostazione semplice, diretta e familiare. È una qualità che non sempre si nota subito, ma che si apprezza quando si cerca qualcosa di affidabile, da scegliere senza doverci pensare troppo. Nel mio caso, l’esperienza è stata proprio quella di un consumo piacevole e lineare. Il profilo generale mi è sembrato equilibrato e ben riconoscibile, con quel tipo di personalità che rende il Cynar immediatamente distinguibile rispetto ad altri prodotti simili. Non entrai in acquisto con aspettative particolarmente elaborate, e forse proprio per questo il risultato mi ha convinto: non ha tradito l’immagine che avevo in mente. Anzi, mi ha dato esattamente la conferma che cercavo, cioè che il formato e la versione acquistata restano fedeli a una tradizione ormai consolidata. Un aspetto che per me conta molto, quando si parla di un liquore come questo, è la sensazione di familiarità. Qui l’ho trovata pienamente. Non mi è sembrato un prodotto pensato per reinventarsi a ogni costo, e questa scelta lo rende adatto a chi apprezza i sapori classici e preferisce rimanere su un terreno conosciuto. In un mercato in cui spesso tutto viene reso più complesso del necessario, è piacevole incontrare qualcosa che si presenta in modo chiaro, senza forzature. Proprio questa chiarezza è uno dei motivi per cui lo considero riuscito. Naturalmente, proprio perché è un prodotto molto legato alla sua identità, lo consiglierei soprattutto a chi sa già cosa aspettarsi o desidera avvicinarsi a un gusto tradizionale. Non lo vedo come una scelta da fare per curiosità occasionale verso qualcosa di completamente diverso, ma piuttosto come una conferma per chi cerca un sapore stabile, sobrio e coerente con la propria reputazione. In questo senso, la sua forza non sta nell’effetto sorpresa, ma nella capacità di mantenersi fedele a se stesso. Non ho particolari limiti da segnalare, se non il fatto che il suo stile così classico potrebbe non parlare allo stesso modo a chi preferisce prodotti più moderni o più marcati nella personalità. Però, per me, questo non è un difetto vero e proprio: è semplicemente la conseguenza della sua natura. Anzi, è proprio quella natura a renderlo interessante, perché non cerca di adattarsi a tutti i gusti, ma resta riconoscibile e coerente. E quando un prodotto riesce a fare bene la sua parte senza snaturarsi, per me è già un punto molto forte. In conclusione, considero questo Cynar una scelta pienamente riuscita per chi cerca un liquore buono e classico, con un’identità chiara e rassicurante. La mia esperienza è stata positiva perché ho trovato esattamente quello che speravo: un prodotto che non ha bisogno di essere spiegato troppo, che si lascia apprezzare per la sua impostazione tradizionale e che conferma un’immagine storica ben precisa. Se si cerca proprio questo tipo di esperienza, secondo me è una scelta convincente e facile da consigliare.
