I'm generally a fan of buying hifi secondhand, in truth much doesn't really change over the years, and what does is either out reach financially for most people or the differences are so slight as to be indescirnible . . At least to my ageing ears. I'm 57.I bought this to pair with a Raspberry Pi 3+, Monitor Audio GS60 speakers, and various high end vintage Sony amplifiers including a couple of V-fet models. The point is the gear the Su-8 is attached to is at least good enough to provide it with a stern test of it's abilities.There are three things to note really, the DAC sounded harsh at first, it sounded distorted with some music and the filters seemed to make little it no difference to the sound to me.Not being an electronic engineer, I have to admit to not understanding the issue of input sensitivity, but I could understand that with the Su-8 volume at full (35) every amp sounded much louder than with other sources. And distorted. The answer . . Turn down the volume on the Su-8 to around 20 and the distortion goes away.Still the sound was sterile and a little dry. I tried all of the filters on the Su-8 but couldn't find anything I liked. Still I persevered because what I could here was more detail compared to my previous front end options. Much more than a PiDac Plus attached to the Pi3+, and a little more than a Sony Hap Z1es.To ensure it wasn't the recording that was the problem, I bought a copy of the same recording of Shostakovich 15 by Michael Sanderling and the Dresden Philharmonic, in 96khz format, and downloaded to the Hap Z1-ES. Definitely a little more detail via the Su-8.Roll on two weeks and things are significantly better. The Su-8 is now warm, detailed, and at least to my ears, a completely transparent Dac, with all filters off. I steam via Qobuz (rubbish company but that's another story! Lol. Their content and quality is good though).I bought for £169. . . Shame that a week later I could have night for less but hey ho. I could also by the Su-9 for £200 more. But I would guess that buying the latest wouldn't add anywhere close in value to that the price difference would demand.I can't comment on other comparisons, but this is a very well built, perfectly affordable companion to a great music set up that makes things even better. The sound it makes is quite literally a revelation.

Had this for about two week and so far its been great. Sound quality is excellent. I have it running optical from and linux box and USB from a laptop. I have it running via XLR through SMSL DA8s amp to some audioengine bookshelf speakers with great results. I also got the SMSL SH-8 headphone amp which also sounds good although I think I need to upgrade my headphones to appreciate this setup more fully. I would recommend.

Very good value for money, and solidly built. The display is a little small but didn't bother me.I found the sound quality to be clearer than some more expensive DACs and really suits lower volume listening but I found it to be a little fatiguing at higher volumes, and lacking some depth. For this reason I returned it. If you like a rounder bigger sound which pleases at higher volumes, the M200 DAC may be more suitable. I've heard these and they have a warmer sound to them. However in a smaller room at lower volumes the SU-8 may well be the perfect option and at such good value.

Really can't say anything wrong with this DAC. It outputs sound to both RCA and XLR at the same time so having single ended and balanced amps attached is a breeze. This will take USB, Optical or Coaxial in and the USB driver installs easy enough and works fine and is ASIO compatible.This also has it's own volume control so you can also attach monitor speakers and use the DAC to control the volume. The screen on the SU-8 is quite small but it's clear to read to see what it says.This is honestly the only DAC you need it is fully balanced in construction sounds fantastic and outputs both single ended and balanced. For thr money you can't go wrong.

Superb sound quality DAC for home theater especially for the price. Really does sound like a DAC that should be twice the price! The EQ settings are great to have and if you are using this DAC for cinema I'd recommend the crystal settings as there is a nice balance between base, mids and highs with clear dialogue. Love the volume control as well and it's a very handy feature for home theater systems.There's only two small things I would say about the DAC:- When pairing the remote to the DAC make sure you hold down the C button on the controller (It's not written on the manual).- The menu takes time to get used to as it's quite fiddly.Apart from that I would definitely recommend this DAC!

I bought the Dt1770 pros with Zen Dac but i was dissapointed with the sound quality. Then i bought this dac with smsl sp200 amp and the improvement is HUGE. I get great bass and overall sound quality from my headphones. Love the combo!

Awful sounding on any settings. Music has no body. Thin weak sounds,very strange highs. Extremely disappointing!

Best Balanced DAC under 200.Can do DSD very well, also built very well. Screen should be bigger.--e-after 6 months of use the unit is about to die... suddenly the sound stopss (USB) though the device is still on (shows bitrate). After restart it works for couple minutes and then the sound is gone again. Driver update did not help. Stay away.-e-eafter trying with different USB cable the issue was solved for now. not sure what was wrong

音質を金額で表すと79、800～10万円のCDプレイヤーという感じでしょうか。ダイナミックレンジもそこそこ、表現性もそこそこ、ピュアオーディオと言えなくもないけれども、音に感動することもない、程度です。当初WIN10PCに接続しても反応せず「ドライバーが必要なのですね」と思いつつ取り合えず光、同軸から音出ししました。CD音源は問題なしですがDVD等のビットストリーム等は反応しません。（ノイズが出ます）音質は同上ですが、10万円CDPにはバランス出力は付いてないので、その部分がこの商品の特色だと思われます。表現力はソコソコなのですが、バランス出力も立体感は弱く、RCAと音量以外あまり変化ないです。ドライバーはメーカーサイトから商品名を選んでダウンロード、本体と接続した状態でインストールすると、あっさり完了です。サウンド設定をいくつかする必要があるかもしれませんが、WIN10、WIN7問題なく使えています。一旦設定してしまえば、どのアプリでも音は出ますので標準的に使えると思います。OPAMPなど交換して遊べるとさらに楽しみが広がるのですが、現状では何となく消化不良的な音質であるという感じです。入門機と捉えて遊ぶには、リモコンで音量も上下出来るので、飽きるまでは安楽オーディオ生活できそうです。気になる人もいるかと思いますので、帯域バランスについては上にも下にも寄ってないと思います。あまり出てないとも言えます。追記します。USB接続に出番が無く、売りに出そうかと考えていたのですが、オーディオラック周りの模様替えで移動、電源ケーブルを付属のもので音出ししてみたところ、あまりの音の貧弱さに？？？。「ここまでの変化は度が過ぎる、電力不足なのかもしれない」と考え、以前使っていたアンプ用の２００Vを接続することにしました。底面のスイッチを230Vに切り替えて分電盤から直の200Vを接続。弾力感のあるドラム、充実したボーカル、ちょっと高音が癇に障るが、ボリュームに頼らない聞きごたえある音に変わりました。勘所は電源でした。安定化電源等お持ちの方はお買い得かもしれません。

Display ist winzig, Schriftgrösse bei Feineinstellungen im Menü viel zu klein, nichts für Kurzsichtige, jedoch muss man dort auch nicht immer neue Einstellungen wählen, wenn man das Gerät kennen gelernt hat. Die Fenbedienung reagiert in der Menüeinstellung sehr empfindlich, wenn man zu lang drückt, werden Optionen übersprungen, das ist etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, sie ist aber zweifellos eine grosse Hilfe. Das mitgelieferte Netzkabel ist kurz, dick und steif, da könnte man sich was anderes einfallen lassen. Bedienungsanleitung im Miniformat, wird aber auch gar nicht benötigt, die Inbetriebnahme kann intuitiv erfolgen.2. Installation am PC ist völlig problemlos - ich arbeite mit div. Linuxversionen. Sie haben das Gerät sofort ohne Treiber erkannt. Feineinstellung dann über Pulsaudio-Regler möglich. Unter Windows war Treiberinstallation erforderlich, geht schnell, kann dann mit foobar in Betrieb genommen werden.3. KLANG - einfach überwältigend und nach meiner Einschätzung in keiner Weise geschönt. Vielmehr kommt die Qualität der Aufnahmen voll zur Geltung. Ist das Ausgangsmaterial von hoher Qualität, so hat man das Gefühl, im Konzertsaal zu sitzen. Man hört Feinheiten, Luftigkeit, Transparenz, Dynamikumfang, Bühne und ist dann zuerst fassungslos. Ich hatte vorher Burr Brown - , Sabre - Vorgängermodelle und AKM - "Velvet" - Dacs - keiner kommt an den SMSL-SU 8 auch nur annähernd heran. Allerdings muss man u. U. Hörgewohnheiten ändern. Kann sein, dass man den warmen Ton des Burr Brown, die weichen, angehobenen Bässe des Fiio K3 (AKM) oder den technisch-kristallinen Ton der älteren Sabre - Dacs vermisst, aber das sind keine Eigenschaften, die die Musik schon mitgebracht hat, sondern Eigenschaften der jeweiligen DAC-Technologien, die die Musik aufpeppen (sollten). Der SMSL ist wohl weitgehend frei von diesen technischen Beigaben - aber über die Klangfilter u. Soundmodi ist auch eine individuelle "Geschmacksanpassung" in engen Grenzen möglich.Auch ältere CD-Aufnahmen von guter Qualität - unterhalb von HiREs - gewinnen durch den SMSL - DAC deutlich (z.B. a.d. Klassik-Bereich Karajan/Kleiber o. Kempff, Brendel, ältere Rubinstein - Aufnahmen). Selbst gute M4A (AAC) - Downloads, z.B. von Youtube klingen viel besser. Schwierig wird es bei älteren Archiv- und Vinylaufnahmen, da man dann jede Kleinigkeit heraushört, also auch die störenden Knackser, Rauschen, Rumpeln usw.4. Die Ausgangsleistung ist für Aktivboxen u. wohl auch für die meisten Kopfhörer völlig ausreichend, Leistung wohl kaum geringer als beim neuen FiiO K3 mit "Kopfhörerverstärker" ! Dazu bietet der symmetr. Aufbau des DAC mit XLR - Ausgängen für die Kanaltrennung zusätzliche Vorteile.Insgesamt: Klare Kaufempfehlung! Hatte schon vor vielen Jahren SMSL - Digitalverstärker gekauft, sie arbeiten noch heute ohne Probleme.

For context in this review, I am listening at the moment to Dvorak's 9th, with the London Symphony conducted by Witold Rowicki. Listening to this on a Sony D-NE330 with Shure E3C in-ear-monitors the brass, especially trombones, would occasionally "rip sheet metal." The imaging on the Sony was excellent, thanks to the recording. The woodwind choir, in particular, was right in the middle of everything, and stable with bassoon just right of center and clarinet on the left.The sound was somewhat better with the earbuds when I put the CD into my Onkyo C-7030 and used the headphone jack.Everything changes when I use coax from the Onkyo to the SMSL SU-8, then balanced connectors from there to my Matrix HPA-3B, and a balanced cable to my Sennheiser HD800S headphones. The image becomes wider, and the "ripping" turns into the fabulous brilliant color for which London was known at the time of this recording.The placement of the string sections across the image are perfectly clear, and contribute new depth to understanding the attention Dvorak lavished on passing elements through these sections. The color improvements to the brass were equally evident in the strings.In other listening I have had tried this device with USB input from both a laptop and a Cayin N3. No problems playing any of the formats for which the SMSL SU-8 is rated. Sound quality as good as my ears can hear.Design-wise, this device packs a lot into a small footprint: internal power supply, USB and coax input, balanced XLR outputs, remote volume control, wide format compatability... unbelievalble bang for buck.Soundwise, it works with my system to hit the "knee of the curve:" that price point where I could spend a lot more and not be able to hear a whit of difference with my old ears. With this link in my audio chain I find myself simply listening to the music, and not thinking about the "next improvement" my system needs. And I find my self eagerly looking forward to the next opportunity to sit down and listen again to old CD's that now have new vitality and listenability.

La musique dématérialisée ne signifie nullement qu'elle se passe de matériel, au contraire. Seul le support de la piste musicale n'est plus matérialisé par un disque compact ; car pour le reste, la question du matériel est vraiment épineuse. Et parmi tous les éléments à prendre à compte, le DAC n'est pas le moindre. DAC ? Le convertisseur de la musique au format numérique en un signal analogique qui sera traité par l'amplificateur.L'appareil repose sur une architecture symétrique, c'est à dire que chaque voie (gauche et droite) a son propre circuit électronique dédié, pour déboucher sur une prise (XLR ou RCA) qui lui est propre, et garantir ainsi une séparation stéréo parfaite.Un DAC repose d'abord sur une puce ; ici, un modèle de la marque américaine ESS, ES9038Q2M, récent, très performant. Il y a donc 2 puces, une pour chaque voie, montées en parallèle. Chaque puce est équipée de sa propre alimentation. Les puces ESS sont très "américaines", c'est-à-dire détaillées, neutres, un rien brillantes.On ajoutera un contrôleur USB XMOS supportant des fréquences d'échantillonnage délirantes (32bits et 768 khz) ainsi que le DSD (64 et 512) : force est de constater que ce DAC va très loin en termes de performances pures, sur le papier.Face à la concurrence qui utilise cette même puce, il ajoutera d'autres qualités : une entrée coaxiale et une entrée optique, bien sur, mais aussi une sortie RCA et une sortie XLR, à même de tirer profit de l'appareil en le raccordant via des câbles dédiés aux entrées XLR d'un amplificateur. On ajoutera aussi une belle alimentation électrique.Le boitage est encourageant, et l'appareil s'installe facilement. La télécommande et le bouton marche/arrêt trahissent l'origine chinoise de l'appareil, et l'écran minuscule et lisible par de bons yeux ou avec une loupe explique que l'attention n'a pas été portée sur l'accessoire. L'esthétique est élégante et le boitier, de taille réduite, est en aluminium brossé et d'assez bel aspect.Il faut passer par le petit écran pour effectuer d'éventuels réglages sur la puce ESS, mais après avoir passé du temps à chercher des différences audibles, on pourra tout simplement en rester au réglage d'origine. On aura plutôt intérêt à soigner la connectique en privilégiant de bons câbles d'entrée et de sortie, et éventuellement d'alimentation électrique.A l'écoute, le résultat est... hallucinant. Est-ce le montage en XLR ou simplement l'appareil lui-même ? Peu importe, car tout semble tellement lumineux, clair, évident. Le souci du détail est bluffant, les vents ressortent de manière incroyable, les cordes en particulier les cordes pincées sont d'une transparence presqu'irréelle. Quant à l'orgue, on frôle l'expérience mystique.Certes, ce DAC ne fera pas de cadeaux : une prise de son ténébreuse et étoufée le restera. Mais une prise de son réussie sera magnifiée, même ancienne : la stéréophonie du début des années 1960 en ressort sublimée, et les enregistrements actuels prennent toute leur saveur. La musique "hi-res" en vogue aujourd'hui permet d'exploiter tout le potentiel des composants de l'appareil, et les logiciels d'upscaling permettent d'atteindre les sommets.Le rapport qualité/prix est incroyable ; certes, il faudra accepter un plumage parfois déconcertant (télécommande, bouton de façade, écran) ; mais le ramage est tellement merveilleux qu'on pardonne à l'appareil ses petits défauts, au final mineur. On notera aussi que d'autres appareils comparables et plus récents n'ont pas de sortie XLR (concurrents) ou n'ont pas d'architecture symétrique (SMSL SU 9).Quel plaisir d'écouter de la musique grâce à cet appareil !

Muy buena calidad de sonido, múltiples conexiones y a un precio de derribo. Completamente recomendable, estaba a la espera del nuevo modelos que no iba a tardar mucho pero con el covid19 hubo retrasos y al final terminé comprándolo y no me arrepiento.El tiempo para comprarlo no fue el mejor por el covid19 que hizo que el pedido se retrasase bastante pero TY-Audio se portó fenomenal ayudandonme a acelerar el trámite de aduanas en ese periodo.
