Land, As Far As the Eye Can See: Portuguese in the Old West (Portuguese in the Americas Series) Paperback – March 12, 2013

Covers in detail only a dozen people. I felt I should be reading more about Portuguese Miners in Arizona, Nevada, and California. Little covered about farmers or dairy farming. Azoreans are a big part of the West, but I learned very little about MY ancestors. I was disappointed. The price was too high for what I bought it to learn about.

For Far West and Gold Rush interested parties, this an excellent, long researched and graphic punctuated collectors book. Especially for persons with interests in many state place and people heritages of whaling-to-land-owner persons coming west from US and across Henry the Navigator's Atlantic and Portugal, and meeting people coming east from mid-Pacific and Asia. Enjoyed the details on cowboys and traders in northern plains and southwest, grazers in Central California and family generations feeding the woolen mills of Pendleton, Oregon and places now gone, and intermeshed with many heritages chronicled by University of California Bancroft Library-linked authors, telling stories of family trees and place names at Portuguese Bend and hundreds of other places

Learned so much about the history of the Portuguese in the West.Great documentation. Some of the chapters felt like text book reading. Enjoyed the personal stories more.

As far as I know, this is the only extensive, book-length study that covers the Portuguese presence in all the old West. I had no idea that the Portuguese had played such an important role. Many rare pictures. Well researched, well written, extremely informative, a pleasure to read.Manuel da Costa Fontes

Wonderful resource for my ancestry hunts.Gives an in depth look at farming and the intense labor to make it in a new country.
