what is the difference between gen 2 green and regular green?

I purchased the original/regular green (a few years ago) which is same color as gen 2 green (purchased this summer) when not lit from behind. Gen 2 seems to let about 20% more light through when installed as fence and shade canopies.

What thread the binding sewn with?

It seems to be a polyester thread. I've had this screen up for 1 year, in constant sun. It's held up well.

Doesn't look like i could cut it to fit our fence that has 2 gates..?

yes you can, just get a grommet kit to make new corners

Is this strong enough to stand with a stretched cable to attach to, top and bottom, with no fence behind it?

yes, however expect some "sag" over the length of the fence unless you place support stakes along the way. I love mine.
