Mastering the Nikon D850 by Darrell Young provides a wealth of experience-based information and insights for owners of the new D850 camera, exploring the features and capabilities of the camera in a way that far surpasses the user's manual. Darrell helps users navigate past the confusion that often comes with complex and powerful professional camera equipment, guiding readers through the features with step-by-step setting adjustments; color illustrations; and detailed how, when, and why explanations for each option. Every button, dial, switch, and menu configuration setting is explored in a user-friendly manner, with suggestions for setup according to various shooting styles. Darrell's friendly and informative writing style allows readers to easily follow directions while feeling as if a friend dropped in to share his knowledge. The learning experience for new D850 users goes beyond just the camera itself and covers basic photography technique. Review: Best book for anyone looking for an alternative to the manual.... - I originally pre-ordered this book in paperback but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was available in Kindle and so ordered an immediate download the other day and determined to read the book over the last many hours. It is recommended to read the book with camera in hand and I will do that next over the coming week. And read it again after that. As I have done with several previous ‘Mastering....’ books by this very knowledgeable and capable author with several decades of experience. I spent a lot of time reading and rereading his book on the D500 last winter and again in the Spring. The D500, to me, is the companion camera to the D850. And so while waiting for this book on the D850 I felt the D500 book a good resource for the D850 as well. The thing I like about these books are, not just the tips thruout by someone who has been shooting professionally for decades, but also his personal ‘Settings Recommendations’ after each section. I look forward to those things while reading each section. I also like the technical explanations set aside here and there in the book for those like myself who choose to get a little deeper in the subject matter. The camera is a technical marvel but the book explains it all very well from start to finish. Much better than the manual and more concise as well as interesting. It’s got a personal touch to it also. I think the authors books, especially this one, are perfect for anyone who really wants to know their camera inside and out. Now like I said, I read this over a couple of days - with 5 hours sleep in between. Reading his other books, and especially ‘Mastering the D500, made it easier because I knew what to expect and I’m very familiar with the material and the D850 camera which I’ve had since last December. So also I’ve been looking forward to this book since last December and to get around the wait I read the D500 backwards and forwards since then with the D850 in mind. So the very helpful tips by a professional with decades of experience, his ‘Settings Recommendations’, technical data placed throughout the book for those like me with an interest (which are easily skipped over if you’re not inclined), well thought out chapters with careful explanations for everything, camera diagrams, step by step ways to adjust settings.........make this the only book you need to understand this wonderful camera. Review: Fantastic guide to get you up and running in no time. - This is without doubt the best book you can get to learn about the D850. The author explains all the features adn controls in great detail and gives an example of why he uses certain settings which I found invaluable. I learned Bracketting in a short time and many otehr techniques. I will keep striving to learn more. Do yourself a favor and just get this Book.

EXCELLENT!!
I can’t recommend this book enough! If you have a D850 and are still learning how to maximize its full capabilities you simply MUST buy this book. It is far more in depth and not at all cryptic as the Nikon manual with detailed descriptions, examples, step-by-step instructions to set up features, and, although personal for everyone it is still appreciated the author indicates his preferences/recommendations. The only thing it lacks is describing the reason why a particular setting becomes disabled as a result of another setting having been selected so you understand why it happened and how to prevent it. Otherwise it’s a VERY comprehensive book! I originally read my manual cover to cover and it was only until I read this book I discovered a few other little tricks the camera can do the manual didn’t discuss. If you’re a D850 user, BUY THIS BOOK!!

Best D850 book out there!
I've purchased a few of books about the Nikon D850. This is by far the best of the bunch! The author makes it VERY easy to follow! The book mirrors the D850 menu structure! So, you can easily follow along. The author gives practical suggestions for settings based on his experience, and offers suggestions based on the types of use one might have. I found it very easy to follow. I purchased David Busch's book took, also from the same publisher. He jumps around quite a bit, and it was hard to follow. The only small gripe I have with Mastering the Nikon D850 is that the author incorrectly states that 2700-3000 Kelvin light is "blue" and 5600-9000 Kelvin light is "red." This couldn't be farther from the truth! He has these two color temperatures reversed. Perhaps the Nikon White Balance pushes more blue into the 2700K range and more red into the 9000K range, but the color temperature of light in the 2700-3200K range is 'warm' while light in the 4300-10000K range is "cool." (I've been a cinematographer for over 30 years, and these are the principals in which we use to light scenes every day! Science is science.) If you're looking for a great guide to help you LEARN how to use a Nikon D850 to the best of its ability, this is it!

Could have been TEN STARS!
Whenever you upgrade cameras there is a learning curve that has to be climbed before you feel competent to take the camera out and product important work with it. I made the jump from a D700 tp the D850 a couple months ago. When I bought the camera I had about two weeks to get a handle on the features and controls before I had to use it to photograph my nieces last dance recital... I could have just taken the D700 as I had for the past seven years but I wanted to do the best job possible since this was the last recital she would likely ever do. This book was irreplacable as the ultimate guide to understanding and mastering the use of the Nikon D850. Everything was broken down into sections and explained in the order and method to make the learning task easy and efficient. One thing that really made this great was that not only were things well explained but recommendations were made by the author for how to setup the customizations (there are A LOT of them) available on this camera. If you are looking for a guide to quickly mastering the Nikon D850 look no further. This is the book!

Decent supplement to go with the Nikon Manual. Update your camera's firmware!
Index is short. A larger page format would be easier to read. Somewhat complements the manual but neither covered a question I had in a complex operation. Had tons of good info in it though in not Nikon language.

Most informative and comprehensive photo/camera instruction book ever!
Not only is EVERY knob, button, control, dial or electronic program described to the smallest detail, but what was absolutely most helpful was the recommended use of each operation/control and "why" each recommended function was chosen by the author. Best photography book, of any type, I have ever purchased, and I have quite the collection! FINALLY, an "instruction" book that did not put me to sleep after turning to page number two!!

There is nothing about the D850 that's not covered in this book.
Recently upgraded from a D810 to a new D850 (yes I did not go for a mirrorless camera) and because I also had the equivalent book by the same author covering the D810 had to have this book. And I am as expected not disappointed. I can only highly recommend it.
