Munchkin® Wood and Steel Baby Gate Extension, 5.5"

We used this to block the doorway into our front windows because that's where the dogs go to bark for hours upon hours at everything from leaves, to ghosts, to runners, walkers, bikers and so on. The wood almost perfectly matches the cabinets it is next to and looks so good! Very easy to open and close, just slide back the locking mechanism, lift up about half an inch, and swing the gate in the desired direction. Little 'switches' on the bottom of the gate allow you to choose whether you want the gate to swing both ways or only one or the other. Also no problem closing the door behind the gate. I chose not to drill or physically attach the knobs to the door frame because our dogs will likely never put any real pressure on it. Regardless, it still feels very sturdy and I'm not worried about it falling or being knocked over any time soon.

Easy to install and configure to space. Solid. Does not slip. Door mechanics take a little getting used to, but not difficult at all. Perfect for our needs.

The top plugs slid out with ease but bottom plugs were packed in so tight I was unable to remove them without mangling the plastic and judging from the reviews I was not the only one to deal with this. The manual says you "may need to use a flathead to remove them," which is a joke since it took a hammer and a war cry. Then to top that off, these monkeys sent me a 5.5" extension without the adapters to connect it to the gate. It's a stylish gate to be sure and I really enjoy looking at it but I also have to look at my son roaming free on the stairs because this company can't seem to do anything right.

This is a solid baby gate and it looks really nice. My wife found it a bit complicated to put together (particularly because we had to use an extension as well to fit our wider stairwell), but I had no trouble putting it together. The first main gate we got was missing the piece that allowed it to snap into place, but Munchkin mailed us a replacement (and had us mail our first gate back so they could trouble-shoot what went wrong). We like the gate, particularly the way the pressure works, and it opens fairly easily. It opens and locks easily, and it managed to stay in place and hold against all the pressure we put on it. Only real issue we're having is that the bottom expanders have trouble fitting our stairwell -- we live in an old row house, and the width isn't the same the whole way up, which means the gate is angled slightly and there's not as much tension at the bottom. A few more width options for the extensions might be nice to allow for more play to fit the gate in in older homes with some... character (two 5.5" extensions = the 11" extension, so we were stuck). But still, all-in-all it's a solid baby gate.

Works great with munchkin steel and wood gate. Easy to install. Not super sturdy but good enough if your just using the gate for pets or children.

The durability, styling, and provided directions are great. However, Munchkin needs to take a look at their manufacturing and design processes. Their manufacturing process leaves burrs on the inside of the baby gate. This makes it extremely difficult to get the bottom plugs out without mangling them. I had to have a friend stand on the gate while I pulled the plugs out with a pair of channel locks. If you have additional tools expanding the gate is not hard, but it is more difficult than it should be. I would not recommend this gate to anyone that either does not have extra tools around their house, or does not have much upper body strength. Once installed the gate is very strong and I have no reason to worry about my dog or 2 year old knocking it over. I'd give this product a 3/5 if you have to use extensions to go into your door frame. If you do not need to use the extensions this product is easily a 5/5. If the appropriate manufacturing processes were used to fabricate the gate I would give the gate with extensions a 5/5.

Ive used several different gates and this is my favorite. I ended up buying another one. Ive had the original for about two years and use it almost daily. It has held up really well and still looks good. The gates are really secure and sturdy. Easy to open and close and lock firmly in place. A lot of other gates ive used and flimsy and cheap compared to this. Worth the money

will save you from having to buy a whole new baby gate.

Munchkin does not ship to Canada and stores do not deal with accessories. The extension was too tall. I had to cut about 1.25 inches off the rod so that it would fit! Good news is the gate is up, fitting and secure. A good gate despite all the hassles.

The metal rod in this extension is like an inch too tall and doesn't work with the gate. So now I have to get somebody to trim the rod to fit.
