We were having a problem with a Great Blue Heron visiting our about 5
We were having a problem with a Great Blue Heron visiting our about 5,000 gallon Koi pond - A lot of Koi pond owners will say these decoys will not work, which may be the case for them. The mistake they may be making is having them in their pond during mating season. VERY IMPORTANT - DON't HAVE ONE IN YOUR POND WHEN IT IS HERON MATING SEASON. THAT IS AN INVITATION FOR A LIVE HERON TO STOP BY. Also use a "life like" heron decoy, which this one is. I waited until mating season was over - then staked this decoy heron in a fairly large flower pot filled with pea size river rock with an annual blooming "sunpatient" flowering plant embedded in the rocks planted in front on the stake the heron is on and a water-plant behind the stake. It works great. No heron as far as I know has visited our pond since doing so. This is may be worth trying. Should you decide to copy my idea be sure to wash all the soil from your plants roots without damaging the roots (don't cut the roots) before placing the roots into the tiny rocks. Fill the pot with the pea size rocks to about 4/5 full - then spread out the roots among the rocks - then gentle place rocks on top of the roots without submerging the top growth of the plant. Place the pot in your pond where it will get some sunlight if needed - mine gets sunlight from mid to late afternoon - shade in the morning and early afternoon. Folks this works - not only does it look great in your pond - but it may work for you to keep herons away as it has done for Deb & I so far. Plus an added bonus is the plant roots help to eat away nutrients out of the water to help prevent algae. Fact is, I use nothing but plants to keep my pond free of algae without using UVs or chemicals and the water is crystal clear but this is, perhaps, a story for another time. Good luck. Bill

This works!
We had a great blue heron that we had been running off. He was seen in our yard on three different occasions. All of our fish had gone into hiding, so we know he had gotten into the pond at least some of the times he visited. Since putting out this decoy, we have not seen him in the yard. I do move the decoy around the yard, as based on what I read, this is important to make it believable to the heron. I will say that the statue looks real. A couple of times I have startled thinking the heron was back and then remembered it was a statue :) !

Looks great! Just needs some tweaks
We bought this decoy to help deter the real thing from raiding our pond. We named him Rico. Heโs fabulous and we love him- the only reason he didnโt get five stars is because the way the decoy is attached to the pole (the part you stick in the mud beside the pond) is flimsy. It broke. We ended up having to tuck the pole up into the body of the bird and filling it with expanding foam. That worked great and is simple enough, so Iโm not sure why the manufacturers didnโt think of making their product more durable with a simple addition of expanding foam and having the pole go up inside rather than attached on the outside to a thin piece of plastic. He does his job well now that he got an overhaul.

Attracts herons!
Well constructed and beautifully made, but it ONLY attracts Heron. I bought it because I read that Heronโs are territorial and it will keep them away, but instead it attracts them. No matter what month I put it out it attracted herons! So if you want it for decoration, then I would definitely give it five stars. And if you want to keep her away, I would give it zero stars.

A Heron that won't eat your koi
I bought this hoping it would scare off the herons I thought were eating my koi. It's a gorgeous decoy. The pole it comes on is quite short and I wanted it to tower above the plantings around the pond. I also wanted to be able to move it around the pond periodically so the herons wouldn't figure out it was a decoy. Setting it into the ground wouldn't allow me to move it so easily. So I bought a long metal pipe at Home Depot that fit into the hole on the decoy. Then I mixed up some quick setting cement in a small plastic container, set the pole in the container, and once it hardened I was able to move the heron (in the container) around the pond every other day or so. Did it work to scare off the herons? It turns out I didn't have any live herons....I won't bother explaining. But the decoy is so gorgeous I left it on the bank of the pond, with the container hidden in the foliage. It's really lovely.

Good Quality Decoy but didn't work as intended
This item was great quality and looked realistic but did nothing to scare off the visiting Great Blue Heron to my fish pond. In fact I think the real heron was attracted to the decoy instead of being scared off by it. Great Blue Herons are supposed to be territorial so once one is in an area, other herons are suppose to go someplace else. I guess mine real heron didn't get the memo.

Realistic looking Heron
So realistic that I had to do a double-take each time I saw it! Would recommend purchasing one, and I'm pleased to say that it still looks great despite being left out over winter.

Spins
I bought the heron as a decoy to keep the real birds away from my fish and it is so lifelike that people think that is real. However, because it only has one "leg", it spins and I have to keep turning it back facing the pond. Otherwise it's great.
