TP-Link Roam 6 AX3000 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 Travel Router (TL-WR3002X)

Update: Oct 2025 About 3 months after buying the travel router WR3002X it died. I called TP-Link and they were actually very responsive. They told me I would have to pay $14 to have a replacement shipped to my house. I would get an email with a shipping label to ship the dead one back for free and lastly the one thing that I did not like. They would Pre Charge my credit card $120 for the new router and cancel the charge if the dead one arrived back to them within 25 days. My first question was why $120? That is nearly double the cost of the router on Amazon. They said it was MSRP value and basically take it or leave it. Anyway I went through with it and within about 10 days I had a new replacement and they had gotten back the old one. I am only out $14 so I guess I cannot complain. Original Review: Wow, I am very happy with this router and it's speed, I was not expecting anything near this speed at this price point. It's darn fast, I was getting the full 150Mb when Wifi Hotspot connected to my Starlink router on 5G. I was going to buy the GL.inet and I am so happy that I did not. This router is much easier to configure and I suspect based on reviews that it is faster. I logged into Express VPN with it and changed my location. Then used the App to just assign the connected device to use VPN. The Speed going through an OpenVpn connection was 80Mb Down and 10 Mb Up which was excellent for such an encrypted connection. The CPU in this router is fast! About the only issue I had with the Router was getting the VPN connection to work the first time. I put in the user and password info for ExpressVPN and the .opvn file they created for the info and it says connecting and stays that way. I kept changing stuff trying to figure out what was wrong and then just by chance I left it uninterrupted for about 2 minutes and it connected. I wish I has known it took that long to establish an OpenVPN connection. Once it is done once the connection is made much faster after that. Please note you need to add client devices to the VPN connection or they will just be connected without VPN. When your on the main screen and press VPN it will take you to the settings to put in a VPN provider. Once that is done and connected you will see at the bottom "Client List". Make sure the device is already connected to the routers WiFi and then hit + and select that device to be added to the client list. That device will now be added unless you remove it.

I bought the TP-Link TL-WR3002X for travel, and it’s exceeded my expectations. The compact size makes it super easy to pack, and the USB-C power option means I can use it with a power bank on the go. Setup was quick using the TP-Link Tether app, and switching between router, access point, or repeater mode is seamless. The Wi-Fi 6 performance is excellent — I got stable speeds for video streaming and work calls, even when multiple devices were connected. It also supports several VPN protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, etc.), which is a must-have when using hotel or public Wi-Fi. I love the extra features like the microSD slot and USB 3.0 port for media sharing. My only gripe is that it sometimes struggles to connect to networks with captive portals, and it doesn’t support SIM cards for cellular fallback. Overall, if you're a frequent traveler or need a powerful mini router, this is a great pick! I love the router. I can't expect less from TP Link, for me they are a great Brand. The speed is amazing, configuration is easy, and the quality is great. A Lil big for a travel router but that's because its a high end router. Works with portable power bank, though it consumes it fast, however with 10K mAh I get to use it for the whole day and consumes about 75% of the power bank! Great to bring on hotels. Now why missing the 5th star, its because it does not recognizes the app if you have to go through that app for internet. It doesn't connect right away and you have to know the log in site instead. Unlike the older brand I had, it connects in 3 seconds, with this device, I have to connect for about 5 to 10 minutes before it recognizes the connection. By the way, if you go on a cruise, this is also great to use so that you can share the internet for multiple device, you just have to carry it the entire time with you with a power bank. ***UPDATE 04/07/2026*** The router keeps on resetting. It is now an ornament sitting in the corner. Very disappointed. The older version is more efficient and more friendly. Obviously I lost the opportunity to return so yeah.

TL;DR: Fantastic and quick, portable(ish) travel router held back by passable software. For reference I upgraded to this router from a GL.iNet 300M (GL-AR300M16). This TL-WR3002X travel router is way faster. On the 300M I averaged closer to 20-30 Mbps download speeds with a VPN on Wireguard despite the advertised max of 50 Mbps. With the TL-WR3002X I am easily able to get around 190 Mbps with Wireguard (nearly 4x). I happen to use Proton VPN as my main provider--primarily for peace of mind when using Hotel internet. In terms of ergonomics, the 300M is obviously a lot smaller and lighter. The TL-WR3002X trades portability for performance so you'll need some dedicated space in your backpack or luggage. While it's thinner than my EERO, the form factor is larger and almost seems less travel friendly (which is odd considering the EERO is not advertised for travel). One thing I do like prefer on the 300M is that you can configure the external switch (I used it to enable/disable the VPN when the performance is a problem--like streaming videos). The TL-WR3002X does have a switch externally though I don't believe it can be customized. My biggest gripe with the TL-WR3002X is the software. There are several annoyances: You can manage the router using either the web portal on tplinkwifi.net (when connected locally) or using the software TP Link "Tether". Annoyingly TP-link has a bunch of sub-branded apps like Deco, Kasa, Tapo each with their own app so I had to download the "Tether" app despite already having all their other apps... The software prevents you from editing the settings (or viewing them) on the mobile app and web portal at the same time (maybe to avoid race conditions). Trying to do so will kick you off of the other platform. Setting up the VPN was also a bit of a pain: Proton VPN is not one of the supported providers out of box but can be done manually by importing configurations. The Web portal does not let you import configs so you will need to do this via the mobile app. The mobile app also has a weird quirk, they have a QR Code scanner to instantly import configs (which Proton VPN provides so thats great) but it oddly doesn't allow you to tweak the configs after importing which was infuriating because Proton VPN's default allowed ip config is set to 'AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0' which is disallowed/invalid to TP-link. Proton doesn't allow you to edit the config inline either before producing the QR Code so you have to (1) manually edit the config file, (2) download it and (3) import it via the app (essentially breaking the convenience of the QR Code).

Product was problematic and not functional on a regular basis. Glenn helped me via chat feature. He was very helpful and assisted me. I may need to return as warranty issue. When it worked it was seamless

Last summer (2025) my wife and I took a month and visited the Black Hills of South Dakota. I knew we would be staying in a hotel with wifi but I wanted more security for my laptop, so ... the tp-link AX3000. After the initial connection, through the hotel's wifi router, to the Internet I had a secure connection at streaming speeds. We were able to connect to our church's streaming services on Sundays as well as doing Internet surfing for things to do and places to go from Custer, SD. My laptop, my phone and my wife's phone were all able to connect at the same time (we didn't need to, but I had to test the unit to see if it really did as advertised! It did!). I've included a picture of the router with my Logitech trackball just for comparison. It's not very big so it doesn't take up much space in the luggage or computer bag. TIP: don't unplug the tp-link until you're ready to leave, otherwise you'll have to go through the hotel's router connection process all over again. That being said, the unit worked as expected and I highly recommend this little router if you travel and are concerned about hotel internet security. I even went to the extent of changing the default SSID to my liking so I could find it easily on each of my devices. Worked like a champ!

Overall, this does a good job, but it's not up to what I expected from TPLink. I've had excellent experiences with their other products. This review is based on using it for Wi-Fi sharing. I haven't tried it with an Ethernet cable, and fewer hotels offer that option these days. Speeds are much lower than without it. There's a switch that allows more speed. It makes it run hotter and use more energy, but even when running off a power bank it was more than efficient enough for many hours of use that way. Speeds were more than adequate for streaming videos, typical office activities, social media, etc. I'm using it in places with public WiFi, and it's easy enough to set things up with two SSIDs, so you can pair your equipment a single time and not have to worry about doing it on a device by device basis when you move to a different place. On the other hand, hooking this up to a host WiFi is more effort than it should be. It's not bad if you want to do it in a place that you will never go back to. But if you expect it to save the credentials for each place you go, so it's effortless if you return, this doesn't work that way. Rather than hooking up to a WiFi network that it encountered before automatically, or giving you a list of known ones with saved credentials, you will need to select the SSID manually when you change locations, and it's been making me resupply the WiFi password each time I do that. It's not a problem if you unplug it and later want to use it with the same SSID. It retains settings until you need to change them. But if you have hotels and airport lounges that you visit regularly, unlike your phone or computer that will remember from last time, you will need to keep track of the credentials to use each time. It might also list the same SSID many times. If you are technical, you already know why. But you would also know why other devices choose to be more user friendly.

NEEDED this to use a baby monitor cam while in a hotel. Where i was in the hotel, the 5ghz wifi didnt have enough signal for this to connect but the 2.4ghz worked perfect. You connect to the hotel wifi in the app on your phone, then sign into the hotel splash page also on your phone, but outside the app , like in a web browser or in wifi settings. You only need to do that once and everything connected to your router is ready to go. It kept us connected during our whole trip. Loved this little magic thing. Thinking i'll even use it to stream shows to a chromecast in hotels. I like this better than the cheaper model because you dont have to manually select the mode with the physical switch. It just knows, or you can force select a mode in the app if you had to. Love that it can run off a battery pack too. And it can be used at home as an extender? Man its great. I have a lot of tp link stuff, they never let me down.

Usefull for secure file sharing and very lightweight, easy setup

An exceptionally good and easy to use travel modem. However it does not have a kill switch which is the basic point of having it for its vpn capability. Disappointing as I said it’s very easy to set up and seems reliable otherwise.

I just got this little guy today and it's already exceeding my expectations. Very easy to setup, app is fast, great set of features. NordVPN configuration pretty straight forward. Can't wait to take it on some trips and see how well it does with hotels and other public Wi-Fi hotspots... I love that you can use a battery pack with usbC cable to power it up...
