A novel to treasure with every middle-grade reader you know (NYTBR), this first Anna Wang story shows how a young Asian-American girl navigates her way around friendship and learn to accept that our diversity is what makes us unique. In Chinese, peng you means friend. But in any language, all Anna knows for certain is that friendship is complicated. When Anna needs company, she turns to her books. Whether traveling through A Wrinkle in Time , or peering over My Side of the Mountain , books provide what real life cannotโconstant companionship and insight into her changing world. Books, however, canโt tell Anna how to find a true friend. Sheโll have to discover that on her own. In the tradition of classics like Maud Hart Lovelaceโs Betsy-Tacy books and Eleanor Estesโ One Hundred Dresses , this novel subtly explores what it takes to make friends and what it means to be one. friendship, feelings, and culture
Anna does not seem to have a lot in common with the other girls in school. Her mother is a housekeeper, which she doesnโt openly talk about. She goes to a Chinese language school during the weekends. Also, she just lost her friend, Laura, to a mean girls clique. She dives into readingโbooks are entertainment and information, and they stave off the loneliness. When Laura is going through a horrible time with family, Anna becomes closer to her. This is the part of the story I felt mixed about. I understood that Laura needed someone's support and that the two girls were affable with each other, but on the other hand I felt Anna was being used since Laura didnโt turn to her new friends, whom she had dumped Anna for. Maybe Laura could have been the new girl or a fellow introvertโsomething else that caused her to lean on Anna. Still, this is realistic and the author does give dimension to Laura and the mean girls. Other than that, I really enjoyed this story. I liked the diversity and reading about Chinese and Chinese-American culture. Aspects of Annaโs life become better and stronger as the story progresses. I loved her character and will look into reading the other โYear Ofโ books by the author.

I bough this as a book club read. IT was perfect. Its suggested for 4th graders but I used it with VERY advanced 5-6 year olds. They loved it...especially the Chinese. The book came as described and in a timely manner

Great Young Reader Series
Great series that introduces other cultures and relationship dynamics to young readers. My 9 yo loved this whole series! The variety of topics in each booj made it so interesting and my child enjoyed following the age progression of characters.

OK book
It had a good story about how a girl loved to read and stayed in her own little world. Reading is great, but you still have to learn to be social, which is a good lesson to learn from this book.
