Oh yes, our new 'Old Reliable' can opener lives up to its name. If you're tired of flimsy can openers that break after a few uses, or struggle with larger cans, this is the tool for you (keep in mind, it's industrial, not a little homeowner can opener). This thing is built like a tank. The plated steel base is solid and provides excellent stability, even when opening taller, heavier cans. I've used it on everything from standard soup cans to larger Sam's sized large food cans, and it handles them all with ease. The long handle provides great leverage, making the opening process surprisingly smooth and requires minimal effort. The cutting blade is sharp and precise, cleanly slicing through the can lid without leaving jagged edges. It feels incredibly durable and I have no doubt it will last for years, even with frequent use. Our old one did get worn out (high school's concession stand), even when we oiled it, it was stubborn, so, longevity might depend on how much it's used/abused. While it's a manual can opener, it's surprisingly efficient. It's much faster than struggling with a cheap electric opener that constantly jams or slips. Plus, you don't have to worry about finding an outlet or dealing with cords. Cleanup is also a breeze – just a quick wipe down and it's good to go. Take it from me, watch out for that 'tooth blade!' The only potential downside is its size. It's definitely not a compact utensil you can toss in a drawer. You'll need to dedicate some counter or storage space to mount it. However, the robust construction and performance far outweigh this minor inconvenience. The screws that come with it are short, so consider buying longer screws and adding washers. Cons: It can get a bit tedious since it's rather large. Lift it, and drop it, as long as the can is in the right area it will pop into it. Some of our smaller helpers find it a bit large. Overall, it's an investment, but a worthwhile one. If you're serious about your kitchen tools and want a can opener that will stand the test of time, this is the one to get. Highly recommended for chefs, concession stand workers, restaurants, and anyone who wants to say goodbye to a frustrating can opening experience. It's truly a reliable workhorse.

[Update: after using it more than two years, it's still going strong. We've not had to sharpen or replace the blade. All I've done to maintain it is add a little oil a couple of times a year to keep it turning easy. Wipe it down after you use it (especially if can contents slosh out), and it will stay in great shape for years.] Well, if you're reading this review after browsing to the Edlund #1 Commercial Can Opener (with base), then I'll assume you fall into one of three categories: you're involved in food service somewhere (e.g., restaurant, soup kitchen), you have a large family that uses a lot of institutional sized (10#) cans, or you are wondering if something like this might work for someone with arthritis. I find myself in the latter two categories. This opener brought to an end our practice of buying and wearing out traditional, hand-held can openers. We're a big family and open a lot of institutional sized cans. I have no complaints. This opener can handle them all--even little tuna cans. Since we're not a restaurant, our biggest issue was deciding where to mount the base plate. We opted for a corner of one of our countertops in the area with the least foot traffic. Mounting the base plate required drilling holes through the countertop, then installing machine screws and nuts (provided). If we want the extra counter space (e.g., when hosting), the opener can be removed from the bracked and stored in a drawer or cabinet. Turning the crank sure beats trying to turn those little handles on the hand-held openers we've used all these years. My wife has recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her fingers (sadly so, because she is so young), so this is a real hand-saver for her.

I’ve been using those little store bought can openers for years and they never seem to hold up. This thing is casted iron, so it’s heavy duty. It does take up a bit of space, but if you have the room to mount it (and you like to open cans). Then I’d say you have a safe bet on this investment. Easy to use. Just mount it, then lift handle. Let it fall on the can top (might need to force it a bit). You just want to make sure the blade lands on the inside of the rim and it punctures the top. After than, drop the ha due and turn. Not sure why I read some reviews on it not working??? Cuz there’s really not much to it. It’s simple and it works. (Be sure to lift the handle before dropping it on the lid). How many can openers have you purchased? How long do they last? I am purchasing this can opener now because I'm moving with a different family member. This is the only opener that will outlast me. Is it expensive? A little up front. Is it worth it? Most certainly. My current opener is over 35 years old. I have changed the blade, locally twice for just over $12 each time. This opener opens tuna cans and number 10 cans just as easy. You do need to mount it to a counter securely with enough room to allow enough space to for the handle to move an entire circle.⁰

It works for our needs, but not as sturdy as I had hoped. Probably won't last us the year.

I'm a prepper/survivalist and have lots of cans stockpiled in the bunker. I have a Edlund #1 in the house kitchen and love it. Needed another #1 mounted and ready to go in the bunker for a SHTF situation, nothing wrong with having 2. Two is one, one is none. Mounted it securely to a sturdy swing-out metal table. Works like a charm....perfect. Now I don't have to worry about having a cheap can opener break right when I need it most, the #1 will never break and if it somehow does I have a backup plus spare parts. I'm ready for TEOTWAWKI

Very solid! My kitchen staff like it much better than the cheaper ones.

I purchased a cheaper one but it left metal shavings in cans. I had to return. I was advised this is the one the government uses in their commercial kitchens. Spend the extra and you wont be disappointed. My cooks are happy to have this can opener to make their job easier. You can see and fee the quality when you unpack it. I opened and handled both so I was able to see and feel the quality difference, My staff showed me how much better this product was to the others.. Happy Cooks and prep staff is vary important :)
