Quake 2
This was a game that I played many years ago and I purchased it because it was cheap (£5).The only downside was that I had to play it at a resolution which meant that the screen size was smaller than my computer. However, I enjoyed it and remembered lots of the missions.

Almost underrated.
While most consider the first quake to be a real game changer, I think most forget/underestimate the significance and greatness of quake 2 - especially when it comes to the lighting engine, level and game design. It's one of the all time greats, a must play for all gamers.

Quake is still the king of the FPS
Quake 2 is an atmospheric, intelligent, thrilling gaming experience. It offers a wide range of monsters, weapons, powerups etc. and a stunning display of different types of level and mission. So how come the original is still so much better through my eyes? Let me explain.Quake was challenging, fun, scary, creepy. Quake2 is fun, scary and creepy. Notice the 'challenging' part missing. Quake 2 has about 8 missions that take place over 19 levels. The original Quake had 30 levels. Also, with the Quake 2 level system working with the idea of 'a couple of levels per mission, a couple of missions per zone', it means that you can complete each zone very quickly.Final score: 68%. Don't let the review put you off buying this game - it's good. But is could so easily be better.

Still quite good
Dating a bit, but still quite good fun, 'Quake 2' is a much better bet nowadays than the original 'Quake'. The main problems with the first game - a drab look, a shift from the carnage of 'Doom' to a series of individual encounters with tough bad guys, and a lack of single-player involvement - have been fixed, and '2' is more of a sequel to 'Doom' than 'Quake'. It has carnage, futuristic weapons, and you can play it with Linux, which is nice. Released at a time when a P200mmx was still quite fast, it rode the first wave of 3D acceleration and with modern PCs you can run it at a stupidly high resolution. Whether it's worth twenty-two pounds is another matter, though. You can probably find it second-hand for much less, and although it hasn't dated all that badly, it's not a patch on 'Half-Life'. That said, despite there being thousands of first-person shooters out there, very few of them recapture the fine blend of ultra-violence and carnage of 'Quake 2'.

Quake Sucks
....This takes first person shooters too where no game has gone before - and lets hope never again. The game play is dire, yet another ID offering where wondering around doing nothing is called atmosphere. The game engine should have been buried with Wolfenstien. Firing the guns is like using a water pistol and since the enemies are 3D there are only about 6 on each level. If you want a brilliant First Person Shooter go for Duke 'Nukem. Its the best there is, even when compared to Quake 3 and playing it in muliplayer mode is the funniest experience you'll ever have.
