OutEquip Summit 12V AC Review With the summer heat, I haven’t been able to use my camper van nearly as much as I’d like. After doing a lot of research and watching countless hours of reviews, I finally decided to bite the bullet and order the OutEquip Summit 12V rooftop AC. The two biggest reasons I chose this unit were its low-profile design and the fact that it runs directly on 12V DC power. For the way I use my van and especially for boondocking, the efficiency of a DC-powered AC was a huge selling point. Installation The installation process was very straightforward. The newly designed mounting bracket is a game changer. It made mounting the unit much easier and, more importantly, gave me a much more secure connection to the roof. For my installation, I added a 3.5-inch piece of metal that spanned the width of the roof frame. The new square gasket that comes with the unit is also much easier to work with, assuming it fits your particular application. OutEquip still includes the older-style gasket as well, so you have some flexibility depending on your installation. They also include foam pieces that support the back of the unit and keep it from bouncing around while you're driving. I installed mine directly in the sun on a 90-degree day, which I definitely wouldn’t recommend—but it was the only time I had available. Once I got the unit on the roof, I connected it to a battery and fired it up. I was honestly surprised by how quickly it started cooling the van down. The unit has multiple cooling settings and fan speeds, but one thing that stood out immediately was how quiet it is. Whether it's running inside the van or standing outside next to it, the noise level is very low. You can hear the compressor briefly when it first starts, but once it's running, it becomes surprisingly quiet. Wiring & Installation Details The unit comes with 6 AWG wire, which was more than long enough for my application. I also liked that the wiring already has protective wire loom installed. That saved me from having to purchase additional loom or spend time running the wire through it myself. Shipping was fast, and the unit arrived very well packaged. I decided to modify mine so I could route the wiring internally rather than cutting another hole in the roof. The top cover has roughly a dozen bolts, and they were all easy to remove. I was also happy to see that the bolts are stainless steel, which should help prevent the rust stains you sometimes see running down the sides of other rooftop AC units. There are also two convenient mounting points for zip ties, which made securing the wiring internally much easier. The screw holes were clear and easy to access. I added some foil tape to mine as well in an attempt to reduce heat transfer. I’m not sure how much of a difference it will actually make, but it certainly can’t hurt. Size & Weight The unit is relatively lightweight and was manageable for one person to carry up the ladder. That said, I’d definitely recommend having a buddy help you. And if your buddy happens to bring a beer for the job, even better. 😂 Having a second person would make getting the unit onto the roof considerably easier and safer. Overall Impression Overall, I’m extremely happy with the unit. The build quality, price, cooling performance, efficiency, and compact low-profile design all checked the boxes I was looking for. The biggest surprise for me was just how quickly and quietly it cooled the van, especially considering it's running on 12V DC. For anyone who spends a lot of time boondocking and wants to avoid the inefficiency of running an AC through an inverter, this unit is definitely worth a serious look. I’ve already recommended it to several of my buddies in the van group I’m a member of, and based on my experience so far, I’d have no problem recommending it to anyone else looking for a capable, efficient 12V rooftop AC. I'm still aways from completing the build out of the van. I use it for camping during the build process. Unit does come with a cover that cleans up the look of it. I will install it once I have ceiling installed.

Installation is relatively simple for anyone with modest experience and instructions are surprisingly accurate and helpful for different configurations. Pay attention to all of the steps. Read them through before you start the install. The air conditioner comes with about 15 feet of 6AWG wire and fuse. They offer multiple methods for routing the wire. I tested the fuse and it only had a .03 voltage drop which is a good sign. I ran it for four hours on the first day in South Carolina heat and high humidity and didn't have any drips inside. I wonder if a couple of reviews that mentioned that issue didn't pay attention to the drain hole locations and offset measurement in the instructions. On low it blows nice and cool, even on a 96 degree day. It uses surprisingly little power and is quiet on lower settings. Obviously, it can use max power (around 600) watts and makes more noise on higher settings and that is normal. I was most impressed with the the value for the cost. The components all seem engineered and built well. The Bluetooth remote app was one of the easier ones to set up. I will use this model again on the next van build.

This unit is perfect for my custom built flatbed truck camper. It fulfills all of the requirements I had for an AC unit. It is low profile, light weight and very energy efficient. The unit cools our TC down quickly and has many features that are great for our setup. The AC comes with many cooling settings including Turbo for quick cooling and ECO and Sleep modes to maintain that cool temperature while being very quiet. Being a 12v unit, there is no need to run a generator when you have sufficient solar and battery setups. I would definitely recommend this for anyone needing an AC unit for there camper.

I recently installed the 12V 10,000 BTU Rooftop RV Air Conditioner, and overall, it’s a solid unit with great cooling power, especially for off-grid setups running on 12V systems. It cools quickly and runs efficiently, which is a huge plus when you're trying to manage power usage on the road or at a campsite. However, I have to be honest about the installation process—it wasn’t the smoothest experience. Removing the screws from the lid to access the panel below was more difficult than it needed to be. The placement and tightness of the screws made them hard to reach and even harder to remove without risking damage. And once you finally get to the panel, be prepared: the connectors holding the lid on are incredibly fragile. It felt nearly impossible to remove the lid without breaking at least one of them, which was frustrating considering how frequently you might need to get back in there for wiring or adjustments. That said, once everything was in place and running, the performance of the unit made up for the hassle. It's quiet, effective, and doesn’t draw a ton of power, making it a great fit for RVers looking to stay cool without draining their batteries. Just be ready to take your time (and maybe have some replacement connectors on hand) during install.

Above all, their customer service is amazing! I purchased the 12V unit as I thought it was both 12V or 24V compatible and the unit would detect the input voltage and change accordingly. When I got it installed I realized that was not the case and needed specifically the 24V one for my battery bank. I emailed and they got back to me within a day. Since I had already cut a hole in my van roof, they just shipped out the 24V one and let me send back the 12V one free of charge at my leisure when I got the 24V one installed. Amazing service! This is going on a 159 WB Ram Promaster. So far I am very happy with the unit. I got the heated option and it seems like it's going to work very well. The AC is actually cooler than I thought it was going to be and keeps the van cool even in full sun. Installation was very easy. I ended up routing the wiring through the return duct instead of drilling another hole in the roof and I'm glad I did. It fit perfectly once I got my ceiling installed. I opted to not use the large white shroud as I liked the look of the black metal plate better than the white. If you don't already have a hole, I would cut to the 14x9 dimensions. If you cut a 14x14, you have to slide the unit back a little bit so that the drain holes miss the gasket. Not a huge deal but I didn't realize that when cutting the hole. I used PowerGrab marine underneath the gasket just to make sure there would be no water that got in around it. The noise level is very appropriate for what the unit is. You can definitely hear it on top when it is in turbo mode, but that's just an initial blast to cool the space down and I don't think would be needed constantly. I'm located in the South East so i've been able to test it on 90-95 degree days. I agree with other reviews that the heat isn't a solution for arctic camping. It's warm and knocks the chill out of the air, but it isn't going to keep the van at 72 degrees when it is 20 outside. I really like how low profile it is. I didn't want a giant unit on my van, especially since it was going very near the back as my solar panels take up most of the rest of the front. The dometic, rtx, etc brands are a good 2-3 inches taller than this one and more expensive. So far, the unit seems very efficient. I have a 24V 200ah battery bank with 870W of solar and another ~250W when I am driving from the alternator. It runs well within that if it's a decently sunny day, even without the alternator input. Overall very pleased with the purchase.

We bought this 12V rooftop air conditioner after the complete failure of our engine-mounted A/C and heating system in our 1973 Winnebago. We use the RV to tow our race cars to events, and let me tell you—driving through summer heat with no A/C is brutal. We were searching for something that could replace both the heat and cooling system, ideally without needing to run a loud, fuel-hungry generator while driving. We filmed our install for our YouTube channel, and even with the added time for filming, it only took about 3 hours to install. The unit sandwiches the roof with the inside and outside sections—very DIY-friendly. It comes fully charged with refrigerant, so no HVAC pro needed. We reused the original wiring route from the roof vent fan and connected power through that. I don't say this lightly: it could not have been easier. Performance so far? Excellent. It has a Turbo mode to cool things down fast, then shifts to a lower current draw to maintain comfort. We saw vent temps in the upper 50s to low 60s—this was while driving with just a single battery and no alternator charging it. According to the specs, a 600Ah battery should give you 10–12 hours of cooling, which is huge for us when we’re boondocking without shore power or a generator. Our real-world test is coming soon at a race in mid-August up in Michigan. That’ll be the big trial—and we’ll update this review after that. For now? Couldn’t be happier.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this air-conditioning unit. I personally chose the AC unit with the heater option. it came packaged well. The directions were very clear and the installation was a breeze, no pun intended. I installed it in a 2020 Ford transit 250 that I am currently building out as a camper van through my testing. I found it it definitely cools the space down I was also very surprised at how quiet the unit is outside and inside the van. This thing is definitely going to change the way we camp. it comes with a remote and easy to use app. Super happy with his purchase.
