The TQR1 Tripod Mount Quick Release System allows you to quickly change heads on your tripod quickly and easily. The TQR1 System comes with one bottom plate (to attach to your tripod) and two top plates (to attach to your heads). The Bottom Plate and Top Plate are also available separately. The TQR1 has a strong dovetail design and is made out of high quality anodized aluminum. When snapped together, the TQR1 is firmly locked with no play or movement. The bottom plate threads onto the top of your tripod and has a small setscrew for extra security. The top plate threads onto to your gimbal head or ball head and has a security setscrew as well. To engage, simply slide the two parts together over the inset safety pressure pin and lock the plates into place with the spring-loaded positioning pin. To disengage, pull the positioning pin and slide apart. Specifications: Height when engaged together: .875" (2.22 cm) Diameter: 2.5" (6.35 cm) Weight when engaged together: 7 oz (198.4 g) Weight of top part: 3.5 oz (99.2 g) Weight of bottom part: 3.5 oz (99.2 g)

I don't think so.
I looked at tripod quick realease offerings and selected the TQR1 because I thought the higher price would reflect quality and duribility. I couldn't have been more mistaken. The connecting slot between the mount and the head is so closely machined that temperature variences make it almost impossible to get them apart. One of the two camera heads (supplied with the original purchase), did not have the 3/8" mounting screw pressed far enough into the receiver slot. It blocked the slot enough to prevent the head from connecting to the mount. Worse yet, in my attempt to connect them, the misalined set screw put a small burr on the male side of mating piece that prevented either head from connecting. I removed the burr with a small bit of steel wool but I have to wonder how long it would work in a field situation where you have dust and possibly sand. Finally, the 3/8" male thread is obviously not designed as to work on smaller cameras but rather for a ball mount or perhaps a heavy lens mount. In any case, it was just a bad choice for me.

Useful Product - Saves time if you have several heads.
I was looking for a product like this for a while. Saves time by not having to loosen the tripod hex bolts to change heads. I have 4 heads - a Giottos ball head, a Giottos 3-way pan head, a Vanguard pistol grip, and the Opteka gimbal head. This unit has 2 top plates. My thinking is that if this system worked well, I would purchase another unit for the other 2 top plates - I would then have a spare bottom plate for a 2nd tripod.I have used this for about a week and this system works. Installing the head with top plate attached onto the bottom plate on the tripod is easy. However, trying to remove the head requires a little more effort than I would have thought. Initially, one must be careful not to make thumb contact with the sharp corners in the bottom plate wedge. It can hurt a little. I have learned to avoid this with use. It would be good if the corners were rounded off to prevent any contact discomfort. $85 is a bit pricey - $50-$60 is a more appropriate price point. As I have just purchased this, I do not know of the long term effects of frequent use - whether or not there would be increased play between the top and bottom plates. Right now, everything is firm and tight. It works for me and I will be getting another unit. 4-stars because of the initial thumb discomfort.
