Grammar By Diagram: Understanding English Grammar Through Traditional Sentence Diagraming (2nd Edition)

This thick, spiral bound volume on high grade paper is structured like a textbook, right down to the Times Roman typeface. Sixteen chapters cover the eight parts of speech, complex / compound sentences, punctuation, common errors in grammar, conjugations, and even additional exercises for which no answers are provided. Lessons have questions with room for answers on the page. Solutions are in the back of the book. Each chapter is logically laid out. The "Usage Problems Associated with Verbs and Verbals" chapter, for example, covers: "the subjunctive mood and three pairs of commonly misused verbs, ... dangling verbals and elliptical clauses...[and] parallelism [which] requires a clear understanding of all the grammatical structures in this text." Doesn't that sound fun? This textbook is wonderful for testing your grammar knowledge, or for home-schooling your kids. 6th grade advanced placement level and beyond. The book revived memories of white chalk on slate blackboards and lessons from nuns in black habits -- a real treat!

I bought this for a Grammar class, it explains a lot of concepts about sentence structure that you sort of know but don't know you know, and teach you them well.

This book really breaks down grammar in a systematic way. All throughout my high school and college years, I would ask my instructors how I could increase my grammar skills, and I always got vague answers like, "just read and write as much as you can." Granted, that wasn't bad advice, but I always had the feeling there was a more logical approach I could take. This book is that approach. I'm convinced that if I would have learned grammar using this book, I would have been more confident when writing reports and term papers. I might have even ended up a writer!

I am using this book in conjunction with Rex Barks: Diagramming Sentences Made Easy by Phyllis Davenport to help me get back up to speed on diagramming. My children are diagramming sentences in school, so I want to help them. This book has been an effective tool. The exercises are very helpful. I would recommend it gladly.

Best college grammar book EVER! I used it for two semesters and it has more notes than any other book I own. Extremely well organized so it could work for tutoring or individual study. Hint: buy new. This has lots of workbook activities and your teacher will probably want you to buy it new (unless they say otherwise). Good luck all!

I will be using this all next year to help my HS students in English class. This guide is exactly what I was looking for.

Required text for a university-level grammar course. Author Vitto has an easy to follow format. Each chapter summarized with Key Concepts. All exercises have an answer key in the back.

Delivered promptly, as usual. This book is required for my son's college course, I cannot comment whether it is good or bad.

I am so happy I came across this book, I feel so lucky to have found it. I have only completed the first chapter and I feel really excited. I will update once I complete the book.
