Descent Second Edition: Lair of the Wyrm

Descent: Journeys in the Dark has quickly become a favorite weekend activity for me and my kids! With all the options available as far as quests, character and class choices, the versatility of the game makes for countless hours of adventures, rarely with the same outcome! And Lair of the Wyrm adds even more new content to further enhance game play. The expansion introduces Rumor cards so that side quests can be incorporated into a campaign (in which players can gain extra rewards for accepting these quests). There is also the Secret Passage search card and token that allows for players to investigate during a mission, offering more reward opportunities (the expansion also comes with a Secret Room tile that you can easily place against the edge of any constructed map). And of course, the additional heroes, monsters, and new class cards by themselves make this expansion worth getting! If you enjoy painting the models, I also recommend purchasing the Valyndra lieutenant pack (Valyndra is the main boss for this expansion).

If you fell in love with Descent second edition you'll love this addition! The two new heroes offer new and creative play styles that can drastically change the battlefield. Both the players and the Overlord will find the twist the two new heroes add to be quite interesting in each quest.The bonus treasure room is a great way for heroes to gather more valuable loot that will sway the balance between Overlord and the players. Even in second edition, I still felt like the Overlord has a slight advantage if the players didn't work together cohesively. With more loot for the heroes, mistakes can be made on their part and it wouldn't result in an over whelming lost for their quest.

Lair of the Wyrm is the first expansion for Descent 2nd Ed., and is designed to be used as an "add-on" to an existing campaign (such as the Shadow Rune campaign from the Descent base game). Using the new Rumor cards, the Overlord can make additional "side quests" available. While the quests from Lair of the Wyrm do not grant experience (as this could skew the game balance for the main quests), it does provide the opportunity for players to earn some additional artifacts.The new monsters are both good at what they do; the Hybrid Sentinels give the Overlord a sturdy shock troop option with a high amount of maneuverability (due to Flying) and a bonus when attacking weaker heroes (those with Strength 2 or less). In addition, the master Hybrid Sentinel has Fire Breath, which can provide a devastating area-of-effect attack when the heroes are clustered together. The Fire Imps , though easily defeated, can provide a significant amount of firepower due to their numbers. Additionally, there are a couple different versions of the quests available, so even with multiple playthroughs the Lair of the Wyrm content can still be something new for the players.Another new feature is the Secret Room mechanic, which can show up in the Search card deck. This can provide the heroes with the opportunity to pick up additional loot, but it can also be manipulated by a crafty Overlord to slow down greedy heroes!

It is a good expansion. More flavor, more quests, but not as many as I thought it would be. Two new classes are solid. My largest gripe is the lieutenant Valyndra. THey give you this massive token rather than a lieutenant token similar to the other lieutenants. I know that some of it is due to her being in "vapor" form. It just seemed to be unnecessary. But my gripes are nitpicky. If you love the original game, you will love this expansion. I do. This is a small expansion, not going to wow or dazzle you with mega changes. It will just give you more flavor to your already existing product.

Really this is an awesome game! I love it. I've had some great times with friends and they have thoroughly enjoyed playing. I saw a few things that could be improved, but really those these are really not needed. I noticed that the Goblin figures were a little flimsy, but they work just fine. Getting better quality figures available would be cool, however it is not necessary.

I am a big fan of Descent Journeys in the Dark 2nd Edition. This expansion has some really great monsters and the Champion class is a really awesome fighter class that inspires/buffs other heroes including itself. The Geomancer class is also a very cool mage class with a unique strategy of essentially summoning stones and luring enemies to the stones to get blasted.

This Descent expansion seamlessly integrates into Descent Second Edition. It adds, among other things,-Two new hero characters-Two new hero classes-One new Overlord card class-Two new monster types-One new Lieutenant-A bunch of quests and itemsVery little of the expansion tacks on advanced rules, so it's very easy to drop these extra bonuse into a new or ongoing campaign. Because the two classes/characters only cover two of the Archetypes (Warrior and Mage), I assume we'll probably see at least one more expansion with classes and characters for the Healer and Rogue.All of the components fit nicely into the original Descent Second Edition box as well.

A good expansion... recommended, but not great. The creatures are a nice addition of course, and the new classes and heroes abilities are really good, but it just seems that this expansion lacks just that 'je ne sais quoi'. A good enough addition, boosting the base game without any real advancements, but no real wow factor.

La seconda edizione di Descent è un capolavoro.Questa è una espansioncina onesta, che vi offre qualche avventura, eroe e mostro in più, senza introdurre vere innovazioni. In particolare le avventure, restano slegate dalla trama del gioco base. Se è quello che cercate, ne sarete contenti.
