The correct answer is given by the company. This clock is NOT silent, but is in no way loud. I have decent hearing and have it placed on my desk, about 15" from me, and can hear the mechanism. It is faint, but you can definitely hear it, as stated by the seller. If this clock were on the other side of the room, I would not hear anything but the slight 'clack' of the number cards.

Can you see the time in the dark?

It depends how dark it is. In low light it's possible, but it doesn't glow in the dark.
