I have been growing most of our veggies and herbs in our indoor basement garden for over 10 years. Although I use a high quality potting soil for my plants, FoxFarm Ocean Forest, I have found that most potting soils compact too much and don't allow sufficient drainage, nutrients, or consistent moisture control. Because of this, I add to my potting soil, and worm casting is one of the additions. Worm castings offer a unique slow-release mechanism for plant nutrients. The nutrients are encapsulated in a mucus coating within the castings, preventing the immediate high-salt release that can burn delicate plant roots, a common issue with synthetic fertilizers in small pots. This gentle delivery system ensures a consistent supply of nutrients over a longer period. The castings are teeming with beneficial bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that work symbiotically with plant roots. These microorganisms convert organic matter into plant-available forms and can help suppress soil-borne diseases. Furthermore, the granular structure of the castings helps improve water retention within the potting mix without causing the soil to compact and become dense. This brand of worm castings has worked well as an additive to my potting soil. The consistency is fine and consistent without chunks. It is brown and in a powder form. High quality worm castings. A little goes a long way, and it’s a large bag, so I’ve only used a small portion so far. It’s been mixed into my planters for about a month and my tomatoes have done well, so it seems effective. Note that worn castings are dense, so if you grow in containers or sub-irrigated planters, you’ll want to mix in a little extra perlite to compensate and keep the soil airy.

Great product and great price! I use this in my raised bed and in mot potted plants. I've tried several brands of castings and these are the best by far. And the price, unlike some, is reasonable. I like Coast of Maine's EWC but I'm not paying $12.00 + for 5 pound bag! Mix 5 gallons of potting mix with 1 gallon of castings, 1 gallon of cow compost and a quart of Epsoma garden tone and you have a soil you can grow anything in. I used this mix for this tomato plant.
