The rustic mantel shelf is another unique piece in the popular line of real wood decor from Dogberry Collections. Constructed from planks of real alder, this item makes a bold statement whether used as a fireplace mantel or a floating shelf. Easy to install and built to last. And as with any quality piece from Dogberry Collections, it's made right here in America.

Love the color!
It's a perfect dark walnut color. The "rustic" look to this is obviously man made & not real weathered wood, but it's still very nice. Hollow center, but made to look like a solid piece & I feel like they did a good job of making it look solid. Looks heavy, but very lightweight & easy to hang. For this price, I'd buy it again!

LOVE this purchase!!!!!
I ordered three of the 5' mantels and mounted them on my wall. I wanted them to be floating shelves above my desk that is pulled out from the wall. I then had the brick work done around them once they were mounted (I used the thin bricks). I LOVE how this turned out!!!! The wall and shelves are the counterpoint of this newly remodeled room (sitting/office/prayer room) that has instantly become my favorite room in the house! The mantels are absolutely beautiful and very well made. It was definitely worth the several weeks wait for shipping . . . after all, I do believe they are hand made. LOVE this purchase!!!

... the internet just because you can't really tell how good the quality is and the color
I was a little hesitant buying a mantel off the internet just because you can't really tell how good the quality is and the color. I was very impressed with this mantel. I purchased the 72" one and it looks great. I mounted this on our brick fireplace with 5/16 lag shields. I have read a lot of opinions on drilling into the mortar joint or the brick. I don't know what is best for sure, but I mounted mine in the mortar joint it it worked very well. However I did use a 3/8 bit rather than the recommended 1/2 bit to drill the hole. I tried the 1/2 first but the shield was just too loose in my opinion. I used the 3/16 bit and just gradually made the hole bigger until the shield was nice and tight. The entire install took me about 3 hours and that was me taking my time. Now I have my flat screen TV and DVD player on it and it works great. I would highly recommend this mantel.

Very nice product
This is a beautiful piece of wood. It’s exactly what I wanted and it looks great. It’s pretty wide so what we did was add another piece of wood to the brace to bring it out farther before we attached the mantle to the wall. This gives it much more stability. I would definitely recommend this if this is the style that you want.

Great Value Mantle
I was going to build a similar mantle for my home and was surfing Amazon for ideas when I can across this item. After pricing the lumber and finish materials I figured out this would only be slightly more expensive than building myself but would save me 10 to 15 hours of time. The quality was good, mounting to my brick fireplace was easy. Order to delivery was around two weeks. I believe these are made to order since the finish was still new and could have used a week in the garage to cure and the smell to dissipate.

"Rustic" shouldn't mean poor quality!!
I must say the mantle looks good from a distance, but that's where it stops. I would agree with another review I read that the stain was not put on very well. There is not stain in some of the cracks and the natural light wood shows through. The biggest issues I have are the quality of the product. I understand this is a "rustic" mantle, and some of the imperfections look great, but the one I received goes well beyond "rustic". The top plate/shelf has a knot in the wood that is so big and deep that it is actually a hole all the way through (see photo with a flashlight on the inside of the mantle shining through). Furthermore, the right side of the mantle slopes off to the front to a point I would be concerned something placed on the mantle would slide off over time with the everyday shakes, rattles, and door slams that I am sure are going to happen in every house (can be seen in photo). As far as installation, this thing is very easy to install. I did opt to ditch the soft wood 1.5 x 1.5 x 40 inch board supplied and substituted a more solid and longer 2x4x57 inch board to beef it up a bit and catch another stud in the wall. My final complaint, and this is not a huge deal, is they do not supply any sort of plugs for the screw mounting holes where you secure the mantle to the mounting plate. Its not something you readily see but it could be a more finished look.I am hoping I just got a bad one out of the batch because I think this could be a great value mantle if they are willing to do something to fix it.

Just what I was looking for!
I am using this for a mantle over my fireplace. Our fireplace wall is reclaimed wood and this blends in nicely. The oak color is a little lighter than the picture which is actually perfect for me. The wood is great with no damage. I got the 10 in wide one (actually 9 in) by 72 and it is a great size. I am very pleased with this mantle. The only thing I would critique is the wood on the top and bottom is prettier than the side showing but I’m sure they all come out differently. Shipping was 3 weeks which I thought was fine and installation was easy. I checked out a lot of other mantels and I’m glad we purchased this one - I love it!

Arrived damaged
Unfortunately this arrived damaged. It had a horizontal crack on the left side of the mantel and a very noticeable blemish on the front edge. Although it would have been very easy to return ((UPS showed up the next day to take it away) our project was already underway and we could not wait to return it and reorder. Our contractor had one of his guys repair it and it looks fine on our finished product.
