What type of soil and ph do these trees need?

Loquats prefer slightly acid soil (pH 5.5-6.5), but soils of up to moderate alkalinity are readily tolerated.

Are these plants self fertile?

As far as I know, yes, loquat trees are self-fertile. Where I grew up, many folks had a loquat tree somewhere on their property. Few people actually and deliberately planted a loquat tree: the seeds are quick to sprout, and kids picked the fruit and ate them while playing in the neighborhood, and suddenly there'd be a loquat tree where none was before. And it was mostly kids who ate the fruit -- it's very delicate and perishable: I've never seen loquats in the market. One mom used to make loquat jelly and it was ok, if not spectacular. We threaded the big brown seeds and wore them as necklaces till they got dry and the papery brown seed cover dropped off. I still like the sweet/tart taste and texture of the fruits some several decades later.

We are in 8 and put burlap on roots and around plant. Wow thought they died. They are coming back. Next year we will burlap roots and plants and put moving blankets over them. They were out in the field. We are in northern Washington zone 8. Weird winter. We will be ready for next winter. These are tough plants !
