Schumacher Electric 0.8A Car Battery Charger & Maintainer, 12V – SC1299

I have these set up in a battery closet where I store my marine and lawn batteries. I flip a switch and all units charge once/twice a month in the winter. No overcharge worries.

This Schumacher battery charger/maintainer works exactly as advertised. It’s easy to use, compact, and does a great job keeping my car battery charged and healthy over time. The 0.8A gentle charging rate is perfect for long‑term maintenance without overcharging, and the clamps feel sturdy and secure. I like that it’s simple to hook up — just plug in and let it do its job. Great peace of mind, especially for vehicles that sit unused for a while. Highly recommend!

I bought 4 of these when they were priced good. They are awesome. I have 5 vintage vehicles in my collection and in the past I was killing my batteries with big 12v chargers. These trickle charges keep all my vintage vehicles charges through all seasons and they keep the battery healthy instead of boiling the electrolyte within the battery (which is what the old school chargers do).

If you have a Optima or Odyssey deep cycle this charger does not seem to go into float mode because those batteries have higher full charge voltages of 12.9-13.0V (versus about 12.6 for starting battery). I noticed my Odyssey was sinking to 12.6V with the charger attached and then the green charging light would come on and charge the battery. This would repeat continuously. Although it is charging the battery its not ideal long term to have battery partially discharged. To be sure, I monitored voltage and current from a full charge (13V) and saw that the charger was off from 13V down to 12.6V (in fact it draws 10ma from the battery during this time) and then goes into charge mode. It never goes into float mode. I did test this on a Duralast AGM starting battery and it did maintain the float voltage at about 13.1V. If you have an Optima or Odyssey deep cycle battery best to get the Optima battery maintainer. Not sure if other deep cycle batteries have high full charge voltages. I believe they do as I searched on this and a generic chart was found for deep cycle batteries which showed 13V at full charge.

I don't drive my beloved antique Honda much but don't want to have to jump it each time after it's been sitting for a while. This solves the problem. Easy to set up. Sturdily built with solid clips.

This is a quality little charge maintainer. It will have a tiny spark when you hook it up, even unplugged, so don't wig out if it does it. I love the sturdy build as well.

Not sure what all the negative comments about cord length are. Maybe an older version? I got the SC1299 august 2024 and the cord is stupidly long. It’s 11ft. More than enough. I have used battery tender brand, NAPA and Nocos. Battery tenders are great, but ridiculous expensive IMO. NAPAs are good but my experience is only with larger chargers and not maintainers. Nocos are nice but kind of pricey. Enter this. It’s easier to use than anything else I have used as you just hook it up and walk away. No setting battery type, amps, etc. It does all the work. A simple LED light to tell you what is going on. If you are familiar with the Noco 1 it’s much bigger than that but you don’t have to set anything. CONS? When it is in float mode the LED light is off. So how do you know it’s plugged in and working? You don’t. So if you need a status LED like 99% of chargers and maintainers have? Look elsewhere.

This item, as delivered, has a two pin US plug and is designed to work from a 110V power supply. Is this an appropriate item to be sold on the Amazon UK site without clearly stating those facts?

Es primera vez que compro un mantenedor, como lo llaman, ya no se baja la batería de mi coche aun cuando no lo use por mas de un mes, fácil de usar compacto y muy útil. Voy a comprar uno mas para la motocicleta.
