I am having trouble envisioning how much "two pounds" is? I need enough for ten children to form a life-sized "hand." How many packages should I order.

My 2.2 pound block is much smaller than I thought it would be. Since the other answer uses butter as an example, I will too - imagine 4 and a half maybe 5 sticks of butter. My friend got a 5 pound box of air-hardening modeling clay (different brand) and that was about the size I was hoping for from this order.

What is the life expectancy of something made from this clay? I've heard of other products becoming powder after a year.

It is really hard to say how long it will last. However, keep in mind that it is raw clay that is not being fired or changed in any way but other than letting the water evaporate out of it. It will not last forever, but it could last anywhere from a few weeks to several years. If you want something permanent, consider a ceramic clay that is fired in a kiln.

Does the clay actually dry hard? As in solid and rock steady, or softer and crumbly.

Hard. Not hard as a rock; certainly breakable but not soft and not crumbly. Good for plaque, tile, figurines, beads etc

Will the clay dissolve in water after hardening?

Yes it does, but I have used a water safe glaze on it after painting and had no issues. I made a sponge bowl for my clay work just to see if it would work and so far after 6 months of use the water has not damaged the sculpture. I am not sure that I would submerge the clay form, or keep liquid in it all the time, but it seems to be resistant with the proper glazes.

Great!

My first time working with clay and it was a success. I used it to make Christmas decorations and they came out so good. Easy to work with, didn't smell too strongly and projects dried relatively quick. I finished the package and was able to reuse it 4 separate times within 2 weeks without it drying out.
