Excellent saw, after a tune up.
Anyone buying this saw for tenons and joinery work should know that a "sharpened" tool is not 100% out of the box. So "out of the box" this saw was ok, but needed some fettling. First, I grabbed some acetone and took off the awful coating that causes drag. It was a tad bent, so i turned it upside down and hit the brass back on the workbench a couple times to get it straight again. Then I removed the set, and re-set it to my preference. I think it came as a crosscut, but I resharpened to a rip cut with progressive rake. If anyone wants to know, I used a Bahco 4in extra slim taper file (also bought here on Amazon); gosh I love those files :-) The saw now: straight, easy to start, cuts smooth with a fine kerf, no drag, wobbling, or wallering-out the cut. The stained beech handle is very comfortable and looks very nice as well. Everything is tight, solid, rigid. I really like this saw now, and am very happy i didn't spend a fortune on it. All I I'll ever have to do is sharpen it and occasionally re-set it. I'll never have to buy another tenon saw again. Highly recommend.

Works well and doesn't cost an arm and a leg
I am not a professional wood worker but I do put hours in at this. This not the uber expensive saw some use, but is middle of the road, price-wise. It seems well constructed with quality materials. Unless you are a professional hand-tool wood worker I believe this product will work well for you for a long time. I also think the handle is well designed and comfortable. That's important to me also. I really like it for my level of work.

Well made, durable
I would expect this saw to last for decades. It seems well made and balanced. Cuts great.

Not open the box and use , as I expected.
I was of the opinion it would be sharp and have a reasonable set. The set was awful. It measured .074 on a .024 thick plate. Worse yet one side had approx.2 x the set as the other. It was acceptably sharp. I have since ordered a Spear and Jackson and I'll bet it will be much better at less than half the price. I also expected the tool to need in a branded, somewhat fancy box with some suggestion of containing a gravity tool. Amazon basics have .ore eye appeal. After an extensive "tuning" it's A very nice tool. I truly appreciate the delightful handle.

Re-evaluation - Very Good
Update 5-20-2109. Not wanting to give up on the saw, I followed the procedure shown in Paul Sellers' video on sharpening a woodworking handsaw and following another reviewer's advice, I cleaned the saw with acetone, thereby removing a protective coating that causes drag. The improvement was like night and day; the saw starts easily and cuts true. I believe Crown tools is selling themselves short by not giving the saw a good edge at the factory, or at least advising the user to clean off the protective coat that inhibits performance. rlpEarlier review. Very sturdy, good looking tool. Extremely difficult to get a cut started, even with Douglas fir, and when it does start is it even more difficult to get a straight cut. Sawing is very difficult; the saw hangs up. I have not been able to cut through a 2 x 4 and get anything near a clean cut. I bought a saw sharpening file and will see if that helps, otherwise this is an expensive paper weight.

Excellent performer
This saw is an excellent performer. Yes, you have to take the coating off. It's there for rust protection when it sits in a warehouse. But blade is straight and true, the set is good. It's an easy starter and it cuts straight.I have to believe that many of the reviewers who report struggling with this saw... Well, put it this way. It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools. This saw performs on a level with some of my premium saws at double the price. It's earned it's place in my starting rotation.

Great quality!
This is a great saw for me. I don't have a ton of experience with hand tools, but this worked for my needs. I took the advice of the top review, took the finish off the blade with acetone, and sharpened the blade. (I watched some Paul Sellers videos) Now I need to learn to properly work with hand tools. The saw feels like good quality. The brass back has good weight to it, and the handle is really comfortable. I will be purchasing the dovetail saw next.

Tune it as others have instructed
Yes, remove the coating with acetone. Yes, give it a quick sharpening and check the set. Once that is done, this will cut for you like nobody's business. It it generally aggressive cut and I get through tenons in no time. Running true is more matter of the tuning than the materials, of course, and I think I tuned it well because it runs true. I love the weight of it because I don't have to put any downward pressure on it at all and it just eats wood. I use it for all my backsaw needs, including dovetails. I had one of those Japanese dozukis for dovetails, but it's a dust collector on my shop wall after getting this little sweetie.
