'Probably the most important archaeological find in history ... Vermes' translations are a standard in the field' Los Angeles Times The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Judaean desert between 1947 and 1956 was one of the greatest finds of all time. These extraordinary manuscripts appear to have been hidden in the caves at Qumran by the Essenes, a Jewish sect in existence before and during the time of Jesus. Written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, the scrolls have transformed our understanding of the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism and the origins of Christianity. This acclaimed translation by Geza Vermes has established itself as the classic version of these texts. Translated and edited with an Introduction and Notes by Geza Vermes Review: Product content - Very good. Review: very good - very good

The Dead Sea Scrolls (without the scriptures)
HarperCollins have published the Dead Sea Scrolls Bible containing a translation of all the scriptural scrolls. This book is a translation of the other scrolls together with some scrolls which we would normally assign to the apocrypha but which are nonetheless extrmely interesting. There is an extensive and very helpful introduction explaining the community which produced the rolls and why they did this. Then follow these sections: The Rules (of the community); Hymns and Poems; Calendars, Liturgies and Prayers; Historical and Apocalyptic Works; Wisdom Literature; Bible Interpretations; Biblically Based Apocryphal Works; Miscellanea; Appendix. Within the text there are copious notes to help the reader put the different works into perspective. This book is a gold mine for anyone who wants to understand how the community came to be distinct from the Jews, how they were organised and what they believed in. They were so firm in their religious faith that they went to great lengths to preserve their scrolls, which they hoped would be of great value to people of a future time who would appreciate these writings and help them to understand and worship God.
