Not totally sure! The original is designed by the famed Frenchman Philippe Bernede-- Clos La Coutale-- You may get more info at www.coutale.com--I have never noticed any country marked on the product? but, it is patented and shows the brand on the opener "Coutale SOMMELIER Prestige!" I got mine from Amazon and it works great!! I do not use the knife as a foil cutter very often but it is fine! I prefer a separate foil cutter as the one in the cork screw is actually a knife that while very nice is very sharp and you could cut yourself if not careful!

No idea Got as gifts Beautiful and quality built

Will it open beer bottles?

Yes this wine opener does also have a beer bottle opener above the hinge. Just above the "Push" engraving in the photos online.

Does it work good on synthetic corks?

Works just fine on synthetic corks.
