A Meticulously Rendered & Written Modern Classic
Guarnido belongs on any knowledgeable connoisseurs shortlist of the best artists working in comics, and the art alone is worth the price. Alright, that's a matter of personal taste, I suppose; but I think it's hard to see Juanjo Guarnido's meticulously rendered work without acknowledging its brilliance. It's like Geof Darrow's 'ligne claire' mastery on Hard Boiled, Charles Burns' Black Hole, or Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira -- so good it wins over casual readers and even those who dislike the genre. Fortunately, the writing is worthy of the painted pages, making 'Blacksad' one of the strongest titles of the last couple decades. The omnibus edition released a few years back collected the first three European albums in one 'must own' volume, and 'A Silent Hell' was the fourth. 'Amarillo', the fifth album, was published by Dark Horse not long after the European debut, and it might be awhile before the next volume... European comics aren't created on the same kind of hectic time schedule as many mainstream American comics.
