It's a very cute movie
I don't know how I slept on this in the early 2000's but someone told about it and I decided to check it out I love Vince and Jennifer so I figured I'd like it.It's super cute and pretty funny I would recommend if you need a comedy to watch.

Not a rom-com ... at all
Jennifer Anniston is absolutely gorgeous. Ravishing. So naturally beautiful it makes you gasp. Makes you wonder what Brad Pitt was thinking when he left her for a stick-figure. But, I digress. All the text for this film leads the viewer to think this is going to be a rom-com. Not so. It's like being a fly on the wall watching a relationship disintegrate. When you realize how fond both people are of each other, you wonder what other layers of feeling can be there. Love? Loyalty? The words 'soul mates' do not come to mind. While they each can't give what the other needs, or even describe that, at the very least they trust each other on some deeper level. Ultimately, for the female, Brooke, the realization is probably that someone else can be the person who will give her that. The man, Gary, eventually must see that not everything can be fixed. Not everything can be retrieved. No matter how much he grows, it's growth with bad timing. Painful to watch. This story is not 'The Way We Were.' For one thing, I believe that Jennifer Anniston (yeah, the one with the hair) is a far better actress than Barbra Streisand (yeah, the one who sings.) I have seen Anniston in other dramatic roles - she has tremendous talent. And has to work with that distracting drawback that is her beauty.I hope that in real life, she is not so stunning and luminous. I hope she's ordinary when she's not on screen. She'll have better luck with husbands!

How To Destroy A Relationship In A Few Simple Moves.
This film is a downer. On purpose it is a downer. But it is a downer that millions experience every single day as they try to hang on to a relationship that is reaching the expiration day. This will make you think back tothat last bad relationship you experience, and that may be a bummer. But the way this story unwinds, and the terrific acting within, it is worth every minute of your attention. Learn something, and watch two of our best actors at work.

Excellent -- Realistic, Attractive and Brilliant Supporting Cast
I had recently begun to have my doubts about the Hollywood romantic comedy (failure to launch...family stone...yawn), but I must say I really liked "The Break Up". What makes it stand out I think is its realism (warning to couples in the middle of actual arguments -- this movie may stir things up). Anyway, it's not as fairly tale artificial as some movies and the main characters were charming in their very different ways. But I wouldn't say charming actually...that makes it sound like "Amelie" or something. They were relatable and real...and funny. I would say that if you liked "Fever Pitch," you might like this film too. It even has a little baseball in it (but just a little). The cinematography is worth mentioning. Chicago looks great as does Jennifer Aniston. Vince vaughn was a bit chubby, but I think that was for the role. In the end of the movie he is thin again for character reasons.Final very important point: often what can turn an okay movie into a memorable exposition of cinema art (or at least a good night in front of the tube in this case I suppose) are the supporting cast members. John Michael Higgins, whom I had never heard of before, was hilarious as Jennifer Aniston's brother (when he tried to get Vince Vaughn to sing at dinner? That was gold). Anyway, Jon Favreau as Vince Vaughn's best friend was, as always, 'money'. And Judy Davis, of course, was tremendous as Aniston's boss at the art gallery. Every day she is not acting is a loss to the art. So I/we liked it.

A good film that's NOT a romcom.
It seems to me that many of the reviewers here are judging this film as if they were expecting a romcom and then marking it down on finding it's not. Having read previous reviews here and elsewhere I knew it was not going to be a convential romcom and wasn't sure what to expect. I am a fan of Jennifer Aniston but I'm pleased to be able to say that I was genuinely pleasantly surprised both by her and the film. It tells of how things can go horribly wrong when a relationship breaks down. There are some amusing moments but there are also some uncomfortable and embarrassing ones too. I found all the performances creditable and Aniston handles the more emotional scenes with aplomb. She doesn't just play "Rachel". At the time it came out there was interest due to the fact that Aniston had just broken up with Brad Pitt and went on to have a relationship with Vince Vaughn during and after filming. If you're an Aniston fan you wont be disappointed and if you're not then it's still worth watching as long as you don't expect a romance with a lot of comedy!By the way: the Blu-ray version is 5 minutes longer than the DVD version but rather strangely doesn't include the bonus 20 minutes of material that's on the DVD.

Tense but good. Not the usual Aniston roll
Some was difficult to watch. Some very real life arguing with them chosing the wrong solutions which only made their lives worse. Definitely not you typical chick flick Aniston movie. Well acted. Would recommend if you are not just into happy, fluffy movies.
