Used this to finish mortar joints in newly laid brick wall
This tool works great. After the mortar sets up a bit, you do the vertical joints first, then the horizontal joints. You set the height of the nail head the appropriate depth. Just make sure to clean it thoroughly after each use.I watched a British tutorial on this and the presenter didn't know which end to use.If done correctly you don't need to use a jointer following this.

better than expected, but less than excellent
I just started using the tool, so my impressions are preliminary. The tool itself is okay, though the skinny handle seems as if it's going to start to get uncomfortable before too long. I find that the hardened nail that comes with the tool (a) isn't long enough to penetrate deep enough into the mortar joints, so I'm going to have to see if I can find a longer hardened nail, and (b) won't stay tightly secured, when I'm raking--no matter how tightly I fasten the thumbscrew (I used pliers, not just my fingers), after a little while it comes loose. I realize this is a light-duty tool and not intended for raking out large areas, but if the thumbscrew doesn't stay tight, it isn't going to be of much use.Update: I was able to find longer masonry screws, and when I cranked down on the thumbscrew with pliers it seemed to grab the nail firmly enough that it hasn't come loose yet, even after raking many rows of mortar. I'm only upgrading to four stars, though, because I do still find the handle awkwardly narrow and uncomfortable--why Marshalltown couldn't have crafted a more ergonomic grip I don't understand.

Sturdy make
Reliably well made, though you’ll probably have to grab a 16 penny if you’re looking to rake back more than a 1/4”. Aside from that it’s solid as can be.
