These are great and throw good quality sparks. Would buy again if needed.

As far as bang for the buck these are absolutely great. I have one in each hunting/hiking pack, one in smaller camping 1st aid box the real deal type box, sutures, dressing, staples, scalpel and so on type kit....not the little its got wipes, bandaids, and ointment style. Also have this style in the Go Bag, and in the very large medical kit box that could easily serve a very large group for a very long time. I recommend that you also have a hand Sabre saw with both metal and wood blades and a "pruning" blade. That covers all options and sliding the metal cutting blade with heavy pressure sideways down the ferro rod makes for a huge shower of hot sparks that last longer than other methods I have tried. In short these are great if your anticipating needing a fire and .... AND HAVE PRACTICED WITH THEM BEFORE YOU NEED THEM.

Sparks well and the price is right

Ordered a 5 pack of rods but they don’t have holes drilled in them like one of the pictures shows.

I'm giving these out to Scouts who pass my fire-building classes. This size works fine, but I prefer the six-inch long, half-inch diameter ones as a bit more practical. You'll get a decent enough spark from these, but maybe not as big as from the larger rods. You'll have to have perfect tinder and know what you're doing to make these really effective.

Fire rods were cheap for the size/quantity. I like the 3/8" thickness, it makes the rod easier to handle especially with gloves on. The rods do work, but I find they are harder than some others I have used and it seems more difficult to get sparks from them, but overall I'm pretty happy with them.
