Delicious Recipes
1001 Low-Carb Recipes: Hundreds of Delicious Recipes from Dinner to Dessert That Let You Live Your Low-Carb Lifestyle and Never Look Back Dana Carpender's book is wonderful. I started a lower carb diet in February of 2011 and as of July 2011 I have lost 33 pounds and six inches from my waist. I have been losing weight and maintaining the weight loss while eating many of the delicious recipes from Dana's book. I love her and my wife is ok with that because she loves her too! In the beginning I read the book and started collecting the ingredients Dana listed. I was able to find most of these in our local stores but I did buy a few of them on Amazon. If you can't find the ingredients there are some substitutes as Dana mentions. Then I went through all of the recipes and marked the ones that sounded interesting to me. I have tried many recipes but I have a lot more to go. We eat something out of Dana's book every single day whether it be "Hot Almond Cereal" for breakfast, Chicken Breasts L'Orange, Ginger stir-fry, Chocolate Mousse (to die for), or Lemon-Vanilla Custard. We also enjoy the Frozen Custard, sugar-free chocolate sauce, coconut cream pie, pumpkin pie, seriously spicy citrus chicken and the parmesan chicken breasts. Her Asian ginger slaw is incredible and we love to take her zucchini-carrot cake on hikes with us to eat as breakfast or a delicious snack. If you are serious about low carb eating, buy this book, purchase the basic ingredients, select some recipes that peak your interest and start cooking. Dana provides a good foundation for low carb meals and you can make modifications to suit your needs. As an example, by changing two ingredients, Lemon-Vanilla Custard becomes "Orange-Vanilla Custard" and it is delicious. Bon appetit!

Great value - lots of delicious recipes
As someone attempting a ketogenic diet, my first time around I quickly grew bored with a diet of meat, cheese, eggs and more eggs, so I searched Amazon for low-carb cookbooks and decided on this one. This is the only low-carb cookbook I own and I find it extremely comprehensive. There are no pictures in the cookbook, which I would normally find to be a drawback, but it didn't hinder or hamper my perusal of the book and subsequent cooking in the least. The descriptions are succinct and descriptive, the directions are clear and the ingredients are common, plus the discussion of low-carb ingredients at the start of the book is quite helpful for newbies. The cookbook has a variety of recipes with different carb counts, which works well since low-carbers often have different daily carb count goals. A huge bonus of this book is that I had a question about a recipe and I emailed the author and she wrote me right back! (I didn't want to use soy powder in a recipe, so she gave me an alternative.) As far as the book design itself goes, since it's so thick, the cookbook stays open without the need to put anything on it or use a holder. Anyone who uses cookbooks regularly knows how big of a deal this is, and I usually look for spiral bound cookbooks, but this one works just fine as a paperback. The only revision I'd make to this book is adding information on the fat in each recipe (each recipe has a listing of protein, fiber, carb and usable carb info). I'm trying to balance my fat and protein intake, and that would be super helpful so I don't have to make the calculations by hand. I think I understand why the author didn't include that info-Americans are all together too fat-phobic. In summary, this is probably the only cookbook I'm going to need for a long time-what a fantastic investment!

Recipes for the uninformed starting on a low carb diet
Actually I'd like to give this book 4.5 stars but that's not allowed in this review. We got this book on a recommendation from others on Amazon. I'm a fairly "plain joe" type of guy when it comes to food, but my wife needs a bit more zest in her food. It has some great recipes and since I'm doing all the cooking and I haven't cooked much other than plain baked chicken, scrambled eggs and bacon, or a straight roast with only salt and pepper, this book allows me to "spice up" the meats and other things so that our new way of eating isn't so "ho hum". It unfortunately does need a small bit of updating as food science progresses. Never-the-less it is a great help and the small negativity depends on what you think of some of the newer sweeteners that have had more research behind them since this book was written. One or two of the products suggested, we've been unable to locate, but I just "experiment" with other things. Over all this book is very good and I would recommend it to others working at the low carb style diets.

My favorite cook book.
The one thing I missed the most when I switched to a low-carb diet was cooking exciting, fun meals. Almost every recipe I knew was loaded with carbs, and every cook book I owned didn't offer much better, so for a long time the fanciest I got when cooking was just switching up the seasonings on my meat for dinner. I saw there were Atkins brand cook books, so I bought those right away, but was pretty disappointed. The meals were bland, many of them called for ingredients I had to go WAY out of my way to make, like homemade bread, and overall lacked variety. Also worth mentioning is how they were chalk full of eyebrow raising nutritional information, like one that stated that studies have shown saturated fat actually "unclogs" arteries... yeah right! Missing cooking so bad, I decided to try out one more book before I gave up, and I'm glad I did. Out of all the cook books I own (over a couple dozen!) this has got to be my favorite. I've tried over a dozen of the recipes so far and having so much fun! There is such a large variety of meals to choose from that are well explained and easy to prepare. One week I'm making all kinds of Indian and Middle Eastern style foods, the next I'm making exciting salad dressings (like Orange Bacon Vinaigrette!) and soups from scratch (love the Swiss Broccoli), and this week I flambeed steak for the very first time! I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes to cook, but I can't recommend it enough to those who are on a low-carb diet as well! I'm so glad I can continue to lose weight without giving up my favorite hobby!

Alot of ingredients you've never heard of
When I switched to low-carb eating a few years ago I learned a lot of substitutions, but the number of crazy ingredients in this book is off the charts. If you are determined to recreate your high-carb eating lifestyle no matter the effort, then this is the book for you. It has lots of recipes to replace the ones you have to give up when you go low-carb. (I find it interesting that she says in her intro that you should not be doing that, then she gives you all the tools you need to do it) That being said, there are also some good recipes in here with normal ingredients, you just have to sort through all the other ones to get them. I would say that this is a good cookbook for people who've been on low-carb eating for awhile and want to shake things up and expand their horizons. It's a little too intimidating for a newbie. If you are a newbie, I recommend George Stella's cookbooks. They have simpler ingredients and recipes.

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME, With the ability to Search it on kindle you can't go wrong
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME, With the ability to Search it on kindle you can't go wrong, extremely good low-carb recipe book, better info than most low-carb / Paleo style books I see, the recipes and the author, both get an A+. I stopped using Ketosis sticks that are less reliable and got a glucometer, and have been using it to my advantage, the recipes in the book are awesome and with my glucometer checks, they have keep my glucose levels way down... I myself still use a lot of artificial sweeteners in my recipes and I drink diet soda as well, an interesting fact I found out in this book, Splenda and other artificial sweeteners are NOT carb free, nutritional labels are allowed a .49 or less tolerance, and if you see the <1 its b/c they are allowed a .99 tolerance so if you consume artificial sweeteners make sure to calculate correctly as 1 cup of Splenda is definitely not 0 carbs the actual amount is listed in the book (sorry I am not a spoiler, you will have to buy the book and read it to know the facts). I DO NOT consume potatoes, carrots, corn, onions (in excess), or tomatoes (in excess) as the author points out that some vegetables raise your blood sugar and it varies from individual to individual, just like some alcohol sugars do... She helped me realize that I needed to make my diet more tailored to myself and be a better hall monitor for myself and sugar levels as well. Great book worth the money and the read, I also love the fact that she tried to help put recipes in there for the gluten free folks aw well. Great Job Diana... (Check out her site listed in the book as well)

Exactly what I needed
I bought this book when searching randomly on amazon as I do, and since I had been recently thinking of adapting to a new lifestyle/diet for myself and family due a history of type 2 diabetes that affects literally everyone in my family it seemed perfect. And it is. In the week that I have changed our eating habits we have both( my spouse and I ) have dropped noticeable weight and feel much better while still eating generous portions and not feeling hungry like most diets leave you feeling. True there are some odd ingredients but start with the recipes that have everything you need. Once you find you are looking at more recipes that call for the same odd ingredient, such as low carb bake mix, then buy it so you have more than one recipe to use it for. It is a lifestyle change, you must be able to maintain this new way of eating if you expect results and health improvement. As for other reviews stating some ingredients are no longer available, like ketatoes, go google a substitute... As the author said, this is a compliation of lots of her recipes offered in one book that was only brought to her attention when they asked her to approve the cover.. Not her fault. I would like to see some recipes that would be more appealing to my 3 year old but thats something I need to work on lol. All in all, a really amazing book that has taken a lot of time preparing bad food and turned it into quick, easy, healthier process.

Excellent cookbook!
I am back on the low-carb bandwagon. Although I did low-carb it a couple years ago and lost 30 lbs, I gained it back by falling back into my old habits. I am now modifying my lifestyle to get to a healthy weight and to maintain a good level of fitness! In addition to cutting out flours, grains and sugars, I have started an exercise regimen. I have lost 18lbs since December 9th, 2014. I generally use cookbooks and recipes for inspiration and ideas. I like to add my own flair to recipes, according to my personal taste. But I would have never known about cauliflower "fauxtatotes" or cauliflower rice pilafs ( I am also hooked on zucchini "noodles" !). This book has helped me get creative in my low-carb kitchen, and I am enjoying de-carbing some of my favorite kinds of dishes. Yes, there are a lot of specialty staples you will have to stock your pantry with, but once you do, you will have a lot of options. Dana goes into detail about a lot of these foods, which for me was really helpful. I am a good cook and consider myself a knowledgeable "foodie" but a lot of these ingredients are new to me. Just the other day, I made Dana's Sour Cream Poppy Seed muffins. What a treat! Even my carb-eating family and friends liked them. A month ago, I couldn't have made a tasty low-carb baked good to save my life! This book is like the "Joy of Cooking" for my low-carb lifestyle!

Great Low Carb Cookbook
After starting a low carb diet (after reading Bernsteins Diabetes Solution book) we bought this book to help us create a few new and interesting recipes. We've already tried a few of the recipes here - and found them easy to follow and tasty to eat. The low carb bread recipes were particularly inspiring. The book is well organised making recipes easy to find. The only problem for us in the UK is translating or finding some of the American ingredients - but with so many online low-carb shops, it's not so very difficult!

Buy this book!
It has no pictures and it is printed on cheap paper, but the recipes are amazing! Everything I have made from it tastes great and is low carb. Not to mention simple to put together. Spagetthi squash carbonara, a delicious shrimp and coconut casserole, slow cooker chicken thighs in coconut milk - if I had the book in front of me I would list even more. Recipes are easy, tasty, varied and low carb. If you have only one low carb cookbook on your shelf, make it this one!
