Q: how is this measured? 55 inches wide by 36 inches long is 1 unit of issue?

I ordered one piece which was, approximately 10-12 feet long, but can't remember exact length. It did indeed come as a single continuous roll 551/2 inches wide by the entire length that I requested.

Q: How waterproof is it? Would any water be able to seep through?

It is waterproof. I used it on the bimini on our sailboat.

Q: what is the backing? I am looking for a backing that would lend itself to an application of Contact Cement to adhere this vinyl to wood

It has a mildly rough surface. It looks like it would work. It's thread like.... Hope this helps.
