Q: How do you maintain the outer wooden bucket to keep it clean and in good shape?

I find that, after several uses, the wood seems to dry out, possibly because some salt has been taken up. The staves separate, and the bottom loosens, sufficiently that it doesn't hold water. I have to immerse it in a large plastic bucket, filling the whole with water for at least a day, so that some moisture is taken up, expanding the wood so that it will retain brine. My new one (6 qt) seemed to reach this condition much sooner that my old 4 qt, which I used at least 25 yrs.

Q: Can you take the crank arm off the shaft.

I held the shaft with a pair of vise grips then just twisted the handle off. The shaft is threaded and the handle twists off.

Q: Are the gears metal- castings?

Metal, yes, but the gear teeth mesh poorly. I have had White Mountain replace the whole top geared section and the second was no better.

Q: Is this an older model that include the metal latches on the bucket that hook onto the hand crank? If so, I'd like to buy this one.

It does Not have any latches. The top will not stay in place and you have to hold it down. Poor design. Not at all like my old white mountain freezer. We are returning this poor design.
