Neoprene is an impressive material. It was one of the first synthetic rubbers and outperforms the natural product in almost every parameter. It is resistant to damage from oil and grease, is largely unaffected by UV light and weathering, and is almost as elastic as natural rubber. This roll of self-adhesive neoprene tape is made from the solid material and is around 2mm thick. It is not made of foamed neoprene, so it will not perform well as a draught-proofing strip unless the surfaces it is attached to are very flat and press tightly together. Although only 25mm wide, small sections can be cut and shaped to make self-adhesive non-slip, vibration-absorbing feet, like the ones often used on electronic equipment — amplifiers and the like. When I say “non-slip”, neoprene has slightly less friction in dry conditions than natural rubber, but outperforms it on wet and oily surfaces. So perhaps not quite as good for keeping your bookshelf speakers firmly in place! My first use for it will be to replace the gripping surfaces on an electric jar opener where the original rubber has gone hard and shiny over time. I am also planning to cover the jaws of my vice to protect delicate items when I am working on them; again, the original rubber has worn and become damaged over many years of use. I would normally attach neoprene with a contact adhesive such as Evo-Stik, but the adhesive on this self-adhesive tape appears to be very strong and may rival the traditional method — it is certainly a lot more convenient to use. This is one of those products that it is always useful to have available for when unexpected jobs present themselves.

This self-adhesive solid neoprene strip measures 300cm x 25mm x 2mm and is an ideal product not just for general use in my workshop, but also for use in my crafts, as it can be cut easily with a variety of tools I use every day. I would prefer being able to buy it in 5 metre lengths, as I have some other projects which will need this. While I will mostly use it at the 2mm thickness, for some applications I will double it up to 4mm or even thicker. I'm very keen on the 2mm size as it also enables it to be laminated into more complex curved forms, with each layer's mechanical adhesion adding to the engineered shape structure in the same manner as traditional thin wood shape laminating. This is solid neoprene with quite a high pressure and shock resistance. I do need to make some bespoke vibration dampeners for some electric motors on one of my projects. I'll be using this in combination with a softer layer to absorb the vibration, which has been causing me some issues due to the thick, joined PU belts I'm running.
